Engines, mileage, and running cost

The XL6 uses a single engine across all variants: a 1.5-litre K-Series Dual Jet Dual VVT four-cylinder petrol unit displacing 1,462 cc, producing up to 103 PS at 6,000 rpm and 136.8 Nm at 4,400 rpm. On petrol variants, this engine is paired with Maruti's Progressive Smart Hybrid system, which integrates an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) and a dual battery setup to provide torque assist, idle start-stop, and regenerative braking. The result is a claimed ARAI mileage of 20.97 km/l with the 5-speed manual and 20.27 km/l with the 6-speed automatic.

The Zeta CNG variant uses the K 15 C S-CNG engine with factory-fitted CNG hardware and advanced electronic injection controls. It returns a claimed 26.32 km/kg — one of the best figures in the 6-seater MPV segment. The CNG variant is only available with a 5-speed manual gearbox and in the Zeta trim. The petrol tank capacity is 45 litres. Real-world testing by Autocar India on the Alpha+ AT returned 13.11 km/l overall, with 9.2 km/l in city conditions and 17.01 km/l on the highway — typical for a mild-hybrid MPV of this size.

Running costs are a strong suit: CNG fuel costs are roughly half those of petrol, and Maruti's wide service network keeps maintenance bills predictable. The XL6 is also E20 fuel compatible and meets Bharat Stage VI emission norms.

Performance and drive

The XL6 is tuned for comfort rather than outright pace. The 0–100 km/h sprint takes approximately 14.31 seconds in the automatic variant — adequate for an MPV carrying six occupants. The light, well-weighted steering makes urban manoeuvring easy, and the suspension is calibrated to absorb road imperfections without unsettling passengers. The mild hybrid's torque assist is most noticeable at low speeds, filling in the gap before the engine builds revs.

The 6-speed automatic is a torque converter unit with steering-mounted paddle shifters on equipped variants, offering a degree of driver engagement. The manual gearbox has a light clutch action consistent with Maruti's urban-focused philosophy. Hill Hold Assist is standard, preventing rollback on inclines — a practical feature for a family MPV.

At highway speeds, the XL6 remains composed and refined. Wind and road noise are reasonably well suppressed. The HEARTECT platform contributes to structural rigidity, which also benefits ride quality on broken surfaces. Ground clearance figures are not officially stated, but the XL6 handles typical Indian road conditions without drama.

Cabin, space, and tech

The XL6's defining interior feature is its 6-seat layout with second-row captain chairs. These seats offer individual armrests and recline/slide adjustments, making long journeys significantly more comfortable than bench-seat alternatives. The all-black leatherette cabin feels premium for the price point, and ventilated front seats are available on the Alpha+ trim.

The dashboard centres on a 17.78 cm (7-inch) SmartPlay Pro touchscreen with wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a voice assistant, USB connectivity, and a premium sound system. A 17.78 cm colour digital MID provides real-time driving statistics, range information, and TPMS alerts. Suzuki Connect adds 40+ connected features including remote lock/unlock, vehicle tracking, Alexa remote capability, smartwatch connectivity, and safety alerts — with a free 3-year subscription.

Boot space is 209 litres with all seats up, expanding significantly when the third row is folded. The XL6 measures 4,445 mm in length, 1,775 mm in width, and 1,755 mm in height, with a 2,740 mm wheelbase. Compared to the Kia Carens Clavis, the XL6 is 105 mm shorter, 25 mm narrower, and has a 40 mm shorter wheelbase — a relevant trade-off for buyers prioritising parking ease over maximum interior volume.

Safety and ADAS

The XL6 comes with 6 airbags as standard across all variants — a meaningful commitment in a segment where some rivals still offer fewer on base trims. Electronic Stability Control (ESP) prevents skidding and loss of control, while Hill Hold Assist adds confidence on gradients. A 360-degree view camera with multiple view modes, approaching object detection, and steering-based gridlines aids low-speed manoeuvring.

Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is standard and integrated into the digital MID. The HEARTECT platform is engineered to absorb and evenly disperse impact forces in a collision. The XL6 has not been rated by Bharat NCAP or Euro NCAP at the time of writing. There is no ADAS suite (autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, etc.) — a notable omission compared to some rivals at similar price points.

Variants and pricing

The XL6 is available in seven variants across three trim levels. The entry Zeta MT petrol starts at ₹11.57 lakh (ex-showroom), making it one of the most accessible premium 6-seater MPVs in India. The Zeta CNG is priced at ₹12.53 lakh, the Alpha MT at ₹12.54 lakh, and the Zeta AT at ₹12.92 lakh. The Alpha+ MT and Alpha+ AT round out the range, with the top Alpha+ AT reaching ₹14.53 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom; on-road prices vary by city and state, particularly for the CNG variant.

The Alpha+ trim adds ventilated front seats and TPMS as exclusive features over the Alpha, but Autocar India notes this makes it relatively expensive for the incremental upgrade. The Alpha MT at ₹12.54 lakh is widely considered the sweet spot, offering most desirable features without the premium of the automatic or the top trim.

How it compares

The XL6's closest rival is the Toyota Rumion, which shares the same platform and engine but is sold through Toyota dealerships with a different feature set. The Kia Carens Clavis is larger (4,540 mm long, 1,800 mm wide) and offers ADAS features and a diesel engine option, but starts at a higher price. The XL6 undercuts the Carens Clavis on entry price and running costs, particularly in CNG form.

Versus the Maruti Ertiga (its Arena sibling), the XL6 offers captain seats instead of a bench in row two, a more premium interior, and Nexa-exclusive features — at a price premium of roughly ₹1–1.5 lakh. Buyers who regularly carry 6 adults and value individual seat comfort will find the XL6's layout superior; those who occasionally need a 7th seat should consider the Ertiga instead.

Who should buy it

The XL6 is best suited to families of four to six who prioritise comfort on long drives, low running costs, and Maruti's service reliability. The CNG Zeta variant is ideal for high-mileage urban users — cab operators, large families in CNG-available cities — where the 26.32 km/kg claimed efficiency translates to significant fuel savings. The Alpha MT petrol is the recommended variant for most private buyers, balancing features and value. Those wanting an automatic should budget for the Zeta AT or Alpha AT. Buyers who need ADAS safety tech or a 7-seat option should look at the Kia Carens Clavis or the Maruti Ertiga respectively.
