The entry point is the SmartStream G1.5 naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 84.4 kW (115 PS) and 143.8 Nm of torque, paired exclusively with a 6-speed manual gearbox. This engine is available only on the lower HTE, HTE(O), HTE(EX), and HTK+ variants, making it the most affordable route into the Clavis range.

The performance flagship is the SmartStream G1.5 T-GDi turbo-petrol, delivering 117.5 kW (160 PS) and a strong 253 Nm of torque from as low as 1,500 rpm. It is offered with three gearbox choices — a 6-speed manual, a 6-speed intelligent manual transmission (6iMT), and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic (7DCT) — giving buyers genuine flexibility. The 1.5-litre CRDi VGT diesel produces 85 kW (116 PS) and 250 Nm, and is paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque-converter automatic. Claimed mileage across the range spans 15.34 km/l to 19.54 km/l (ARAI), with the diesel manual variants typically returning the highest figures. The ISG (Idle Stop & Go) system is standard on most variants, aiding city fuel economy; it is not available on the diesel automatic.

Running costs are competitive for the segment. The turbo-petrol with the 7DCT is the most popular combination for highway-heavy families, while the diesel manual remains the rational choice for high-mileage users covering 2,000 km or more per month.

Performance and drive

The turbo-petrol engine is the clear highlight of the Clavis driving experience. With 253 Nm arriving from 1,500 rpm, the car pulls strongly from low speeds — a useful trait when loaded with seven occupants and luggage. The 7DCT shifts quickly and smoothly in Normal mode, and the paddle shifters on select variants add a degree of driver engagement. The 6iMT is a good middle ground for those who want a clutch-free experience without the cost premium of the DCT.

The diesel automatic combination is well-suited to long-distance touring, offering relaxed highway cruising with strong mid-range torque. The 2,780 mm wheelbase — longest in its class — contributes to a settled, composed ride quality, and the suspension tuning prioritises comfort for rear-seat passengers, which is appropriate for a family MPV. Ground clearance figures were not disclosed in official data, but the Clavis handles typical Indian road conditions with confidence.

The GT-Line variants introduced in 2026 add lime-coloured brake calipers, gloss-black roof rails and ORVMs, revised bumpers, and metal pedals for a sportier visual identity, though the mechanical package remains unchanged.

Cabin, space, and tech

The Carens Clavis's interior is dominated by the 67.62 cm (26.62") Dual Panoramic Display Panel — a claimed first-in-segment — which integrates a 12.25" HD touchscreen with navigation and Kia Connect, and a 12.25" HD digital instrument cluster. The Infotainment/Temperature Control Swap Switch allows the driver to toggle between climate and media controls on the same screen, reducing button clutter. A D-cut steering wheel and 64-colour ambient lighting (on select variants) complete the premium cabin atmosphere.

Space is a genuine strength. The 4,550 mm length and 2,780 mm wheelbase translate into generous second- and third-row legroom. The 6-seater configuration — available on DCT variants — features second-row captain seats with sliding, reclining, and tumble functionality, along with a retractable seatback table with cup holder and device holder. All variants get roof-flushed second- and third-row diffused AC vents and five USB Type-C ports, ensuring rear passengers are well catered for on long journeys.

Top-spec variants add front ventilated seats, a BOSE Premium Sound System with 8 speakers, a Smart Pure Air Purifier with AQI display, a Smart Dashcam with dual camera and mobile app connectivity, a 360-degree camera, and a Blind View Monitor in the instrument cluster. The Next Generation Kia Connect system supports over 80 smart features, OTA map updates, and OTA system updates.

Safety and ADAS

Safety is a core selling point of the Carens Clavis. Six airbags are standard across every variant — a meaningful commitment at a base price of ₹11.27 lakh. The Robust 18 Hi-Safety Package is also standard across all variants and includes Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), Downhill Brake Control (DBC), ABS with Brake Assist, All Wheel Disc Brakes, Rear Occupant Alert, Roll Over Sensor, ISOFIX, and all-seat 3-point seatbelts with reminders.

ADAS Level 2 with 20 autonomous safety features is available on GTX+, HTX+, X-Line (with DCT), and the new HTX(O) variant introduced in 2026. The ADAS suite includes Forward Collision Warning and Avoidance Assist (for cars, pedestrians, cyclists, and direct oncoming vehicles), Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Collision Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Collision Warning and Avoidance Assist, Driver Attention Warning, and High Beam Assist, among others. The Carens Clavis has not yet been rated by Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP as of the time of writing.

The Carens Clavis line-up spans eleven trim levels — HTE, HTE(O), HTE(EX), HTK+, HTK+(O), HTX, GTX, HTX(O), HTX+, GTX+, and X-Line — covering a wide range of powertrain and feature combinations. The base HTE with the 1.5L NA petrol and 6MT starts at ₹11.27 lakh (ex-showroom), while the top-spec Clavis GTX+ 7 is priced at ₹21.67 lakh (ex-showroom). The 2026 update added GT-Line styling packs to the GTX and GTX+ trims (priced from ₹19.80 lakh) and the X-Line variant at ₹21.56 lakh, all exclusive to the turbo-petrol engine.

Mid-spec trims received meaningful upgrades in the 2026 update: the HTK+ now includes an electric sunroof, and from HTK+(O) onwards, buyers get a panoramic sunroof, LED headlamps, and a dashcam — features previously reserved for higher trims. This makes the HTK+(O) and HTX variants particularly strong value propositions for family buyers who want a sunroof and connected safety tech without stretching to the top of the range.

How it compares

The Carens Clavis competes most directly with the Maruti Suzuki XL6, Toyota Rumion, and Renault Triber in the six-seater MPV space, and with the Hyundai Alcazar and Kia Carens in the three-row crossover-MPV segment. Against the XL6 and Rumion, the Clavis offers a significantly more powerful turbo-petrol engine, a larger display, and ADAS Level 2 — features neither rival currently matches at comparable price points. The Hyundai Alcazar is a closer rival in terms of feature content and pricing, but the Clavis's 2,780 mm wheelbase gives it a tangible space advantage.

The Carens Clavis also faces indirect competition from compact SUVs like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, which buyers may consider if third-row seating is not a priority. The Clavis's trump card in those comparisons is its three-row practicality combined with a feature list that matches or exceeds those SUVs at similar price points.

Who should buy it

The Kia Carens Clavis is best suited to families of five to seven who regularly travel together and value a combination of space, safety, and technology. The turbo-petrol 7DCT is the recommended combination for most buyers — it offers the best balance of performance, refinement, and feature availability. Buyers who cover high annual mileage should consider the diesel manual, which is likely to return the best fuel economy figures in real-world use.

Buyers who primarily need a city runabout or who rarely use the third row may find a compact SUV a more practical choice. Similarly, those seeking a fully automatic gearbox with the diesel engine should note that the diesel automatic is available only on select variants. The Clavis is not available with a CNG kit or a hybrid powertrain in its current form.
