Market position

Toyota is a volume and hybrid specialist in India, holding a strong position in the MPV and mid-SUV segments while rapidly scaling its electrified lineup through the Toyota-Suzuki alliance and in-house development.

India strategy

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) operates one of India's broadest multi-powertrain lineups, spanning petrol, diesel, CNG, strong hybrid (SHEV), and — via the Urban Cruiser Ebella — battery electric. The brand's India portfolio is built on two pillars: in-house developed models (Innova HyCross, Innova Crysta, Fortuner, Hilux, Camry, Vellfire, Land Cruiser) and badge-engineered models co-developed with Maruti Suzuki under the Toyota-Suzuki global alliance (Glanza, Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Urban Cruiser Taisor, Rumion). Strong hybrids are a central differentiator, with the Innova HyCross, Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Camry, and Vellfire all offering self-charging hybrid options. Toyota has also showcased flex-fuel (ethanol-blend) prototypes of the Innova HyCross at the 2024 and 2025 Bharat Mobility Global Expo, with a production version under consideration.

Toyota has announced an investment of over USD 3 billion (claimed) in India, covering expansion of its existing Bidadi, Karnataka plant and a new greenfield facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. Once both sites are fully operational, combined annual production capacity is targeted at over 1 million units (claimed). India has become one of Toyota's top four global markets, with the brand selling over 300,000 vehicles in the country in FY25 (claimed), of which roughly 60% were Suzuki-sourced models. Toyota is also a growing export hub, shipping vehicles to Africa and the Middle East.

Looking ahead to 2030, Toyota plans to launch up to 15 new and refreshed models in India (claimed), including at least two in-house SUVs designed to compete with Mahindra and Hyundai in the mid-market and premium segments, an affordable pickup truck targeting rural buyers, and a lower-spec hybrid variant of the Innova HyCross aimed at fleet operators. The diesel-only Innova Crysta is expected to be phased out by 2027 due to CAFE 3 emission norms. A Toyota-badged version of Maruti's upcoming electric three-row MPV (codenamed YMC, based on the Heartect-e platform) is anticipated around 2027–28, and the new Land Cruiser FJ is slated for a late-2028 Indian debut with petrol, strong hybrid, and plug-in hybrid powertrain options.

Toyota's India strategy is explicitly two-pronged: attract urban and semi-urban buyers with mid-market and premium SUVs and MPVs while deepening penetration in small towns and rural markets through lean-format showrooms and compact service workshops. The brand is targeting a passenger car market share of approximately 10% before 2030, up from around 8% currently (claimed), leveraging its reputation for reliability, strong resale value, and expanding hybrid expertise.
