The most powerful compact SUV in India is the Mahindra XUV 3XO EV, whose motor makes 110 kW (Mahindra quotes 150 PS) and 310 Nm, from Rs 13,88,999 ex-showroom. The Tata Nexon.ev 45 is second at 106 kW and 215 Nm. The strongest petrol engine under four metres is the XUV 3XO's 1.2 TGDi at 96 kW and 230 Nm, from Rs 12,02,500, and the same car also leads on diesel (85.8 kW, 300 Nm) and CNG (82 kW, 200 Nm in CNG mode). Maruti's most powerful compact SUV, the Brezza 1.0 Turbo at 81 kW (110.12 PS) and 170 Nm, is the eighth-strongest petrol model in the class.

Most power rankings for this class only compare turbo petrols. This one counts every engine sold in an SUV under four metres, whether petrol, diesel, CNG or electric, one line per engine, so you can see where each powertrain actually sits.

Below these sit the 1.2-litre non-turbo petrols: the Fronx and Taisor at 66 kW (89.73 PS), the Punch at 87.8 PS, and the Exter, Venue and Sonet 1.2 at 61 kW. The Brezza CNG makes 64.6 kW (87.8 PS) in CNG mode and the Fronx CNG 57 kW (77.5 PS).

Each output is as its maker prints it. Mahindra, Tata (for the Nexon and the EVs) and Kia (for the Sonet) print kW only; Hyundai, Maruti and Skoda print both; Tata prints only PS for the Punch, and Kia only PS on its Syros page. Where we converted kW to PS we say "about" (1 kW = 1.3596 PS). Engines within 0.3 kW are ranked level: 88.3 kW and 120 PS are the same output written two ways. Prices are ex-showroom from Mahindra's, Maruti's, Hyundai's and Kia's own pages, checked October 2026.

CNGMahindra XUV 3XO ZNG82 kW200 NmTata Nexon iCNG, 73.52 kW and 170 Nm

One car winning all four is unusual, and the XUV 3XO's torque figures are the bigger story. Its diesel's 300 Nm is 40 Nm more than the next diesel, and its CNG version keeps the full 82 kW and 200 Nm in CNG mode, according to Mahindra's brochure, where most CNG engines lose a large part of their output when running on gas.

1. Mahindra XUV 3XO EV: the strongest motor under four metres

Mahindra's brochure for the XUV 3XO EV gives the motor as 110 kW (150 PS) with 310 Nm and a 39.4 kWh battery. The body is the same 3,990 mm XUV 3XO shell. Mahindra's site lists the AX5 at Rs 13,88,999 and the AX7L at Rs 14,95,999, both priced without a home charger, so budget for that on top.

Electric motors deliver their torque from rest, which is why 310 Nm in an EV feels stronger than the same number in a petrol car that has to rev to reach it.

2 and 4. Tata Nexon.ev 45 and Punch.ev 40

Tata's Nexon.ev page lists the 45 version at 106 kW and 215 Nm, with 0 to 100 km/h in 8.9 seconds. The Punch.ev brochure gives the 40 kWh version a 95 kW motor with 154 Nm, and the 30 kWh version 65 kW. The Punch.ev is 3,880 mm long, so it is the smallest SUV in the top five. Tata's site shows starting prices that vary from page to page, so we have not printed a variant price for either.

3. Mahindra XUV 3XO 1.2 TGDi: the most powerful petrol

Mahindra rates the direct-injection 1.2 at 96 kW at 5,000 rpm and 230 Nm from 1,500 to 3,750 rpm. It is sold with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque-converter automatic. On Mahindra's price list it starts at Rs 12,02,500 for the AX5 L manual, the AX5 L automatic is Rs 13,27,500, and the top AX7 L TGDi is Rs 15,03,500.

If you only care about turbo petrols and a Rs 15 lakh budget, our most powerful turbo-petrol SUVs under Rs 15 lakh ranking adds bigger SUVs that undercut that price.

5. The 120 PS cluster

Five turbo petrols sit within half a kilowatt of each other. Hyundai's brochure gives the Venue's 1.0 Turbo GDi 88.3 kW (120 PS) and 172 Nm, and the Venue N Line uses the same engine. Kia's Syros page lists 120 PS and 172 Nm, and the Sonet brochure prints 88 kW and 172 Nm. Tata's new Punch brochure introduces a 1.2 turbo at 120 PS and 170 Nm with a 6-speed gearbox, and the Nexon's brochure lists its 1.2 turbo at 88.2 kW and 170 Nm.

On paper you cannot separate them. The choice comes down to gearbox, price and safety rating. Hyundai's Venue starts at Rs 7,99,900 across all engines and Kia's Syros at Rs 8,41,900. Hyundai and Tata publish no certified mileage for these cars.

10 to 14. Diesels and the Kylaq

The XUV 3XO diesel makes 85.8 kW at 3,750 rpm and 300 Nm from 1,500 to 2,500 rpm, and starts at Rs 9,36,000 for the MX2. Hyundai's Venue and Kia's Sonet and Syros share a 1.5 diesel at 85 kW (116 PS) and 250 Nm. The Nexon diesel is 84.5 kW with 260 Nm. Skoda's Kylaq, petrol only, makes 85 kW (115 PS) and 178 Nm from its 1.0 TSI, the most torque of any 1.0-litre engine here.

15. Mahindra XUV 3XO TCMPFi and ZNG

The cheaper 3XO petrol uses a port-injected 1.2 turbo at 82 kW and 200 Nm. Mahindra's brochure lists the ZNG CNG version at the same 82 kW and 200 Nm in both petrol and CNG modes, with a 60-litre (water equivalent) CNG tank. That makes it the most powerful CNG SUV under four metres by a clear margin: the Nexon iCNG is 73.52 kW and 170 Nm in CNG mode, and Maruti's Brezza CNG 64.6 kW and 121.5 Nm. The petrol 3XO starts at Rs 7,79,000 and the cheapest CNG, the MX Edge, at Rs 9,99,000.

16 to 18. Where the Maruti SUVs rank

The Maruti Brezza 1.0 Turbo is the client's most powerful compact SUV. Maruti's brochure gives its K10C DiTC Smart Hybrid 81 kW (110.12 PS) at 5,500 rpm and 170 Nm from 2,000 to 3,500 rpm, with a 6-speed manual only. It ranks sixteenth of the engines in our table and eighth of the petrol models, behind the 3XO, the five 120 PS cars and the Kylaq. It is also the cheapest turbo in the class at Rs 7,49,900 for the LXi Turbo, and Maruti certifies it at 20.47 km/l (LXi and VXi) and 19.96 km/l (ZXi and ZXi+), figures that Hyundai and Tata do not publish for their turbos.

The Brezza's 1.5 K15C makes 75.8 kW (103.05 PS) and 139 Nm and is the engine to choose if you want an automatic Brezza, because the turbo is manual only.

The Fronx 1.0 Turbo Boosterjet makes 73.6 kW (100.06 PS) and 147.6 Nm, and the Toyota Taisor uses the same engine and output. Maruti certifies the Fronx turbo at 21.5 km/l (manual) and 20.01 km/l (6-speed automatic). NEXA's price header gives the Fronx range as Rs 6.90 to 12.03 lakh. Nissan's Magnite turbo, at 100 PS and 160 Nm, is level.

Neither Maruti wins a power ranking, and buying either for outright pace would be a mistake. The Brezza's case is price and certified mileage; the Fronx's is efficiency and a proper torque-converter automatic with its turbo. Our compact SUVs with a turbo engine guide weighs those trade-offs.

How this list was built and what was not verified

We listed every SUV under four metres that its maker currently sells and read each engine's peak power and torque from the maker's brochure or spec page: Mahindra (XUV 3XO, XUV 3XO EV), Tata (Nexon, Nexon iCNG, Punch, Punch.ev, Nexon.ev), Hyundai (Venue, Venue N Line, Exter), Kia (Sonet, Syros), Skoda (Kylaq), Maruti (Brezza, Fronx), Toyota (Taisor) and Nissan (Magnite). We ranked by peak power, one line per engine, and treated outputs within 0.3 kW as ties.

Not verified: Tata variant prices, because Tata's pages quote different starting prices for the same car; Kia and Skoda variant prices beyond the Syros starting price; and the Renault Kiger, whose 1.0 turbo we did not re-check against a current Renault document. Kia publishes no spec sheet for the Syros, so its 120 PS and 116 PS come from Kia's showroom page. Peak power is not the same as acceleration: an EV's instant torque, a car's weight and its gearbox all change how quick it feels.
