Market share

≈14–15% of overall passenger cars (FY24, claimed); historically India's No. 2 carmaker by volume

Market position

Hyundai is India's historically second-largest passenger car brand, with a broad lineup spanning entry hatchbacks to premium SUVs and a growing focus on hybrids to defend market share against rising domestic rivals.

India strategy

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) is executing its most ambitious product offensive since entering India in 1998, with 26 new models (claimed) planned by FY2030 spanning ICE, hybrid, and electric powertrains. The current ICE lineup covers hatchbacks (Grand i10 NIOS, i20, i20 N Line), sedans (Aura, Verna), and a strong SUV ladder from the Exter micro-SUV through the Venue, Creta, Creta N Line, and Alcazar. Facelifts for the Verna and Exter are expected in 2026, alongside the introduction of the Bayon crossover — a new i20-platform-based model targeting the ₹10–12 lakh bracket.

Hybrids represent Hyundai's most significant strategic pivot in India. At its 2025 Investor Day, HMIL confirmed eight hybrid models (claimed) by FY2030, targeting a 16% share of its total lineup and contributing to a 52% 'eco-friendly' product mix goal. The Palisade Hybrid is expected to arrive around 2028 as the brand's flagship offering above ₹30 lakh, while a new 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine is reportedly under development as the foundation for mass-market hybrid applications. The next-generation Creta is also expected to offer hybrid powertrain options alongside petrol, diesel, and EV variants.

HMIL manufactures its full model range at its plant near Chennai (Sriperumbudur, Kancheepuram district), which also serves as a key export hub for Africa, the Middle East, and neighbouring South Asian markets. The company operates over 1,366 sales points and 1,550 service points across India. EV models including the Creta Electric and imported IONIQ 5 are handled separately on evindexindia.com.

Despite recently slipping behind Tata Motors and Mahindra in monthly sales rankings, Hyundai retains strong brand equity and industry-leading EBITDA margins. The hybrid push is partly a response to Toyota's dominance in that segment and to CAFE 3 regulatory incentives, while the broader 26-model roadmap is designed to reclaim Hyundai's No. 2 position and defend against fast-rising domestic rivals.
