Which Small Cars Offer the Best Value for Money in India? Price per Feature at One Trim Each (2026)
Counting ten safety and convenience features at one trim per car, the Tata Tiago Pure+ A (Rs 6,49,990) gives the most per rupee, with all ten at about Rs 65,000 each. The Maruti Swift VXi (Rs 6,67,900) is next at Rs 74,211 per feature with nine of ten and a certified 25.35 km/l, and the Maruti Baleno Delta (Rs 6,99,900) also has nine, at Rs 77,767 each. The S-Presso and Alto K10 cost under Rs 5 lakh but have only six features each, so they cost more per feature.
Counted feature by feature at one trim per car, the Tata Tiago Pure+ A at Rs 6,49,990 gives the most for the money. It has all ten items on our checklist, which works out to about Rs 65,000 per item. The Maruti Suzuki Swift VXi at Rs 6,67,900 comes next at Rs 74,211 per item: nine of ten (it lacks a reversing camera) and the best certified petrol mileage here, 25.35 km/l. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno Delta at Rs 6,99,900 also scores nine, at Rs 77,767 each, and is the roomiest of the three. The cheapest cars, the S-Presso and Alto K10, come in at about Rs 80,000 to Rs 83,000 per item. That is because each is missing four items, not because they are expensive.
Most value lists compare price ranges and a few highlights, and this site already has a best hatchbacks under Rs 7 lakh list and a guide to value hatchbacks with high-end features. This one does something narrower. It picks a single, specific trim for each small car, counts a fixed list of features against the price of that trim, and shows the arithmetic.
The method
For each car we chose the trim most buyers end up in: the first one with a touchscreen that runs Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Where a car has no such trim at a published price, we used the trim that does have a price. Each trim was checked against ten items:
- Six airbags
- Electronic stability control (ESP)
- Hill hold
- Rear parking sensors
- Reversing camera
- ISOFIX child-seat anchorages
- Touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
- Steering-mounted audio controls
- Electrically adjustable mirrors
- Remote keyless entry
Each item counts once and the price is divided by the count. That is deliberately crude. Six airbags count the same as remote keyless entry, and engine, space and mileage do not count at all. We show those separately so you can weigh them yourself.

Prices are ex-showroom Delhi, single-tone paint, checked October 2026: Maruti's Arena and NEXA price pages, Tata's Tiago and Punch price pages, and Renault's Kwid price page. Equipment comes from each Maruti and Renault brochure and from Tata's variant lists. "Not listed" means the maker's grid has no row for the item, and we count it as absent. Renault publishes only a starting price, so we take Rs 4,52,900 to be the Evolution manual, the lower of the Kwid's two variants. Hyundai publishes only a starting price for the Grand i10 Nios (Rs 5,59,700), so we could not price a trim for it.
Two results surprised us. The Tiago, a Tata, beats every Maruti on this count. And the cheapest cars are not the best value per item, because the items they miss are the safety ones.
The value picks, trim by trim
Tata Tiago Pure+ A: the most kit per rupee
Tata's variant list gives the Pure+ A everything on the checklist. That includes an HD reversing camera, a 20.32 cm touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, ESP with traction control and hill hold. It also adds things we did not count: cruise control, automatic climate control, passive entry with push-button start, and rear AC vents. The engine is a 1.2-litre three-cylinder making 86 PS and 113 Nm, according to Tata's brochure. The weaknesses are real, though. Tata prints no certified mileage, the boot is 242 litres, and the current Tiago has no crash-test result. Tata's site still promotes the 4-star Global NCAP rating, which dates from 2020 and a two-airbag car.
Maruti Swift VXi: the best Maruti on this count
At Rs 6,67,900 the Swift VXi has six airbags, ESP, hill hold, ISOFIX and rear sensors on every variant. It adds a 17.78 cm touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, steering controls, electric mirrors and keyless entry. The Z12E engine makes 61 kW (82.93 PS) and 112.4 Nm, and the brochure certifies 25.35 km/l on the manual. That is the best petrol figure among the trims compared here. The reversing camera is ZXi+ only. If CNG matters, the Swift S-CNG is certified at 35.07 km/kg (manual) and 35.34 km/kg (AGS), the best CNG figures of any hatchback we checked, though CNG starts at the VXi CNG, Rs 7,57,400. The boot holds 265 litres.
Maruti Baleno Delta: nine items and the most room
The Delta has the same nine items as the Swift VXi for Rs 32,000 more. The extra buys space rather than features: a 2,520 mm wheelbase against the Swift's 2,450 mm, a 318-litre boot, and rear AC vents (not on our list). It uses the same 82.93 PS engine, certified at 23.80 km/l on the manual. The Baleno's crash-test results are 26.52/32 for adults with six airbags and 34.81/49 for children at Bharat NCAP, but they were assessed before the September 2026 update and apply to the variant codes listed at the time. For the Baleno's top-trim features, see the Baleno model page.
S-Presso VXi+ (O) and Alto K10 VXi+ (O): cheap, but count what is missing
Both cost under Rs 5 lakh with a touchscreen, steering controls and keyless entry. The S-Presso adds electric mirrors, while the Alto K10's mirrors adjust from inside. The missing items are what matter. The S-Presso brochure lists only two airbags on every variant, and neither car's grid lists ISOFIX or a camera. Hill hold comes only with the S-Presso's AGS, and the Alto K10 brochure does not list it at all. Both have ESP on every variant. The Alto K10 has six airbags as standard, so of the two it is the safer buy for Rs 17,500 more.
Fronx Delta: nine items, priced like a crossover
The Fronx Delta 1.2 has nine items at Rs 7,74,900, the same nine as the Swift and Baleno. It also has automatic climate control on every variant, which we did not count. Per item that is Rs 86,100, so you are paying for the crossover body and a 4.9-metre turning radius, not for extra equipment. The 1.2 makes 66 kW (89.73 PS) and is certified at 21.79 km/l, the lowest here. The reversing camera starts on the Zeta Turbo at Rs 9,75,900. The Fronx has no Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP result for the India-spec car.
Celerio ZXi+ and WagonR ZXi+: touchscreen only at the top
On both cars the touchscreen arrives only on the top trim, and on the manual you still get no hill hold, which Maruti fits only to the AGS. The Celerio ZXi+ (Rs 6,30,400) is certified at 24.97 km/l. The WagonR ZXi+ (Rs 6,41,400) uses the 1.2-litre making 66.9 kW (90.9 PS) and adds the biggest boot here, 335 litres, at 23.56 km/l. Neither brochure lists ISOFIX or a reversing camera. Both cars are better value in their cheaper AGS trims, as the cheapest automatic hatchbacks list shows.
Tata Punch Smart and Renault Kwid: low counts at the trims we could price
These two score badly partly because of what we could price. Tata's page showed a price only for the Punch Smart, Rs 5,74,990. It has six airbags, ESP, hill hold and ISOFIX, but no touchscreen or steering controls; those start on the Pure and Pure+. Its strength is crash safety: Bharat NCAP scored the Punch 30.58/32 for adults and 45.00/49 for children, a result published in 2026 that covers petrol and CNG versions. The Kwid Evolution has ESP, rear sensors and a 20.32 cm touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, but only two airbags. Six airbags and the camera are on the Climber, which Renault does not price separately.
Hyundai Grand i10 Nios: not ranked
Hyundai publishes only the starting price, so no trim could be priced. From the brochure, the Era and Magna have no ESC or hill-start assist, the Corporate gets them only with the AMT, the reversing camera starts on the Sportz, and ISOFIX is on the Asta alone.
Where the per-item count misleads
The count rewards cars that pile on cheap items and says nothing about running costs. On certified petrol mileage at these trims, the order is Swift 25.35, Celerio 24.97, S-Presso 24.76, Alto K10 24.39, Baleno 23.80, WagonR 23.56 and Fronx 21.79 km/l. Tata, Hyundai and Renault print no figures to compare. On space, the WagonR's 335 litres and the Baleno's 318 litres beat the Tiago's 242. On CNG, the Swift (35.07/35.34 km/kg), Celerio (34.43) and Baleno (33.61/34.47) lead; the Celerio's CNG comes only on the VXi manual. For costs per kilometre, see hatchbacks with the lowest running cost.
How this list was built and what was not verified
Each car's trim was checked against its current brochure feature grid. The Alto K10, S-Presso and WagonR brochures are image-based and were read from rendered pages. Tata equipment comes from the variant lists on Tata's own price pages. Maruti prices are the single-tone figures from the rendered Arena and NEXA price pages, cross-checked against Maruti's ex-showroom price feed. Where Maruti's top trims list a dual-tone price first, we quote the single-tone price.
Not verified: rear parking sensors on the Punch Smart, which Tata's list for that trim does not mention; which Kwid variant Renault's starting price refers to; Grand i10 Nios trim prices; and certified mileage for any Tata, Hyundai or Renault car. The Tata Altroz and Hyundai Exter, which appeared in an earlier draft of this list, were left out because we could not price a comparable trim from the makers' pages.
