Best Hatchback for First-Time Car Buyers Under Rs 10 Lakh: Price Ladders and Base-Variant Safety (2026)

Best Hatchback for First-Time Car Buyers Under Rs 10 Lakh: Price Ladders and Base-Variant Safety (2026)

Every base variant of the nine hatchbacks checked has six airbags. What differs is stability control (absent on the Tiago Smart and the Grand i10 Nios Era and Magna), ISOFIX (Asta only on the Nios, not listed for the Celerio, WagonR or Alto K10) and crash evidence. The Altroz is the only one with a 5-star Bharat NCAP result that covers its base trim. Maruti's ladders run from the Alto K10 at Rs 3,69,900, which lacks an air conditioner and power steering on the base car, to the Baleno Alpha (O) AGS at Rs 9,99,000. The cheapest automatics are the Alto K10 VXi (O) AGS at Rs 4,97,400 and the Celerio VXi AGS at Rs 5,63,400.

A first-time buyer with up to Rs 10 lakh should start with three base variants priced within about Rs 16,000 of each other: the Maruti Suzuki Swift LXi at Rs 5,83,900, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno Sigma at Rs 5,98,900 and the Tata Altroz Smart at Rs 5,99,990. All three fit six airbags, stability control and ISOFIX to the cheapest car in the range. The Altroz adds the only 5-star Bharat NCAP rating among hatchbacks (29.65 out of 32 for adults). The two Marutis add certified mileage of 23.80 to 26.25 km/l. On a smaller budget, the Maruti Suzuki Celerio at Rs 4,69,900 and the Alto K10 at Rs 3,69,900 also have six airbags and ESP as standard, with caveats covered below.

Most first-car advice compares top variants, which is not what a first-time buyer usually drives home. This guide does the opposite. It lays out the full price ladder for each car, then lists what the base variant has and lacks, taken from the manufacturer's brochure. There is already a first-car guide for budgets under Rs 8 lakh on this site that covers sedans and small SUVs; this one stays with hatchbacks.

Prices are ex-showroom, from each manufacturer's price page on 13 October 2026. Equipment is from the current brochure for each car. "Not listed" means the brochure's feature grid has no ISOFIX row.

The headline is that six airbags no longer separate these cars. Every base variant has them. What still varies at the bottom of the range is stability control, child-seat anchorages, and whether anyone has crash tested the car in its current form.

Price ladders for the Maruti hatchbacks

Maruti publishes every variant's price. These are the steps a first-time buyer is most likely to weigh: the base car, the cheapest automatic, the cheapest factory CNG and the top of the range.

ModelBase variantCheapest automaticCheapest CNGTop variant
Alto K10Std (O), Rs 3,69,900VXi (O) AGS, Rs 4,97,400LXi (O) CNG, Rs 4,84,400VXi+ (O) AGS, Rs 5,44,900

BalenoSigma, Rs 5,98,900Delta AGS, Rs 7,49,900Delta CNG, Rs 7,92,400Alpha (O) AGS, Rs 9,99,000

The WagonR also has a flex-fuel ZXi+ listed at Rs 7,23,900, above its petrol range. Every variant of all five cars is under Rs 10 lakh.

Tata and Hyundai are less forthcoming. Tata's price page gave a starting price for the Tiago (Rs 4,76,990) and the Altroz (Rs 5,99,990), a stated Altroz ceiling of Rs 10.74 lakh, and variant prices for one Tiago trim: the Pure+ A at Rs 6,49,990 manual, Rs 7,04,990 AMT and Rs 7,49,990 iCNG. Hyundai's pages gave only the starting prices in the table. So the upper Altroz trims breach the Rs 10 lakh ceiling, and for the i20 the price of any trim above the Era has to come from a dealer quote.

1. Tata Altroz

The Altroz is the pick for a buyer who puts crash protection first, because its rating reaches the base car. Bharat NCAP scored it 29.65 out of 32 for adults and 44.90 out of 49 for children, and the applicability table names the Smart trim in the petrol and CNG families. Tata's brochure lists six airbags, ESP, ISOFIX, reverse parking sensors, remote keyless entry and power windows on all four doors on the Smart.

It is also the largest car here to learn in. It is 3,990 mm long with a 5.0-metre turning radius, which a new driver will notice in a tight basement. The touchscreen and rear camera start on the Pure. Tata's brochure has no certified mileage table, so running cost cannot be compared with the Marutis from a manufacturer figure.

2. Maruti Suzuki Swift

The Swift is the easier car for a new driver: 3,860 mm long, a 4.8-metre turning radius, and the highest certified petrol mileage of any hatchback at 25.35 km/l manual and 26.25 km/l AMT. The LXi has six airbags, ESP, hill hold assist, ISOFIX, reverse parking sensors, keyless entry, front and rear power windows and a rear defogger.

What the LXi does not have is a driver seat height adjuster, which arrives on the ZXi, or a touchscreen on Maruti's price-page listing. The step most first-time buyers take is to the VXi at Rs 6,67,900, which adds a 17.78 cm SmartPlay Pro touchscreen, or the VXi AMT at Rs 7,12,900. The current India-spec Swift has no Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP result, so its safety case rests on equipment alone. The engine makes 82.93 PS and 112.4 Nm.

3. Maruti Suzuki Baleno

For Rs 15,000 more than the Swift LXi, the Baleno Sigma is a bigger car with a 318-litre boot against 265, and the same base safety kit: six airbags, ESP with hill hold assist and ISOFIX. Adjustable headrests for all occupants and a 60:40 split rear seat are standard too.

The Sigma is plain inside. Rear AC vents and tyre pressure monitoring start on the Delta at Rs 6,99,900, the rear view camera on the Zeta at Rs 7,99,900, and Level 2+ ADAS only on the Alpha (O) from Rs 9,49,900. Certified mileage is 23.80 km/l manual and 24.77 km/l AGS. The Baleno is the only car here besides the Altroz with a Bharat NCAP result, but that result (26.52 out of 32 for adults on the six-airbag car, 34.81 out of 49 for children) belongs to the previous model and lists petrol trims only. The facelift sold since September 2026 is untested.

4. Maruti Suzuki Celerio

Under Rs 5 lakh the Celerio LXi is the strongest base variant. It has six airbags and ESP, and it is the one budget Maruti that Global NCAP has tested in its current six-airbag form: 3 stars for adults and 2 for children in 2025. Certified mileage is 25.24 km/l on the LXi and 26.00 km/l on the AGS.

The LXi's omissions are real. Maruti's grid shows no rear defogger, no rear wiper and no split rear seat, and hill hold assist comes only with the AGS. The brochure lists no ISOFIX on any trim. The VXi AGS at Rs 5,63,400 is the variant that makes sense for a learner in city traffic.

5. Tata Tiago

The Tiago Smart at Rs 4,76,990 pairs six airbags with ISOFIX and three-point belts with reminders on all seats. Tata's own site still promotes the 4-star Global NCAP result, which dates from 2020 and a two-airbag car.

The weak point for a novice is that ESP with traction control and hill hold are held back for the Pure+ trim. The Pure+ A, with those plus a touchscreen, reverse camera and automatic climate control, is Rs 6,49,990. No certified mileage is published in the brochure.

6. Hyundai i20

The i20 Era has the most complete base safety list of the nine: six airbags, ESC, hill-start assist, vehicle stability management, ISOFIX and rear parking sensors. It is in sixth place because of what cannot be checked. Hyundai publishes no certified mileage, its price page shows only the Rs 5,99,000 starting price, and the one crash result is a 3-star Global NCAP rating from 2022 on a two-airbag car.

7. Maruti Suzuki WagonR and Alto K10

Both are cheap to buy and both fit six airbags and ESP to every variant. Neither brochure lists ISOFIX, and their Global NCAP results (1 star adult for the WagonR, 2 stars adult for the Alto K10, both in 2023) were on older two-airbag cars and have not been repeated.

The Alto K10's Rs 3,69,900 price comes with a warning. The Std (O) has no air conditioner and no power steering in Maruti's feature grid. Those arrive on the LXi (O) at Rs 3,99,900, which is the real entry point. The WagonR LXi at Rs 4,98,900 has central locking, idle start stop and a 335-litre boot.

8. Hyundai Grand i10 Nios

The Nios Era has six airbags and little else that a new driver needs. Hyundai's brochure shows no ESC on the Era or Magna, ESC on the Corporate only with the AMT, and ISOFIX on the top Asta alone. At Rs 5,59,700 it costs more than a Celerio or WagonR that has stability control as standard.

Warranty and service network

Maruti's brochures for these five cars state a standard warranty of 3 years or 1,00,000 km, whichever is earlier, extendable to 6 years. Hyundai's i20 and Grand i10 Nios brochures state 3 years or 1,00,000 km, with a paid extension to 7 years. The Tata brochures read for this article do not state warranty terms, so none are quoted.

No service-centre counts are given here. None of the brochures states one, and the numbers that circulate online could not be traced to a current manufacturer document. A first-time buyer is better served by checking how far the nearest authorised workshop is from home.

How this list was built, and what was not verified

Each car's feature-by-variant claims were read from its current brochure and its price from the manufacturer's price page. Bharat NCAP scores were read from bncap.in on 13 October 2026; Global NCAP results are quoted from its published factsheets and apply to the older cars named.

Left out because no manufacturer source was found: certified mileage for the Tata and Hyundai cars, variant-level prices for the i20, Grand i10 Nios and Altroz, and Tata warranty terms. The Renault Kwid, Citroen C3 and Toyota Glanza are not ranked. The first two were not checked against their brochures, and Toyota publishes no ex-showroom prices, so the Glanza cannot be placed against a price ceiling. The Tata Punch is a micro SUV and belongs in a different list.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best hatchback for a first-time buyer under Rs 10 lakh?

On crash evidence, the Tata Altroz: 5 stars at Bharat NCAP, with the rating covering the Rs 5,99,990 Smart trim. On ease of driving and running cost, the Maruti Suzuki Swift, with a 4.8-metre turning radius and 25.35 to 26.25 km/l certified, from Rs 5,83,900.

Do base variants of these hatchbacks have six airbags?

Yes, all nine. What differs is stability control, which the Tiago Smart and the Grand i10 Nios Era and Magna lack, and ISOFIX, which the Nios has only on the Asta and which the Celerio, WagonR and Alto K10 brochures do not list.

What is the cheapest hatchback with six airbags and ESP?

The Alto K10 Std (O) at Rs 3,69,900. It has no air conditioner or power steering, so the LXi (O) at Rs 3,99,900 is the practical choice.

Which is the cheapest automatic hatchback for a new driver?

The Alto K10 VXi (O) AGS at Rs 4,97,400, then the Celerio VXi AGS at Rs 5,63,400 and the WagonR VXi AGS at Rs 5,99,400. The Celerio and WagonR automatics add hill hold assist.

Is the WagonR unsafe because of its 1-star rating?

The 1-star Global NCAP result is from 2023 and a two-airbag car. The WagonR now has six airbags and ESP on every variant, and it has not been retested, so there is no result for the current car in either direction.

Do Tata and Hyundai hatchbacks have worse mileage than Maruti's?

That cannot be answered from manufacturer documents. Maruti prints certified figures in its brochures. The Tiago, Altroz, i20 and Grand i10 Nios brochures print none, and this guide does not substitute aggregator numbers.
