Market share
≈6–7% of overall passenger cars (claimed target of 10% by 2028 under Kia 2.0 strategy)
Market position
Kia India is a value-premium SUV and MPV specialist, positioned above the mass-market segment with feature-rich products and one of the few mainstream brands to offer diesel across its lineup.
India strategy
Kia India entered the market in 2019 with the Seltos mid-size SUV and has since built a diverse lineup spanning SUVs, MPVs, and premium models. Its core volume drivers are the Seltos (mid-size SUV), Sonet (sub-4-metre SUV), Syros (compact SUV), and the Carens/Carens Clavis MPV family, all offered with petrol, diesel, and in select cases CNG powertrains. The Carnival premium MPV rounds out the non-EV range at the top end. Kia is one of the few mass-market brands in India to continue offering diesel across multiple segments, a key differentiator in a market where diesel demand remains meaningful.
All India-market Kia vehicles are manufactured at the brand's dedicated plant in Penukonda, Andhra Pradesh, which was established with a claimed investment of over USD 1.1 billion. The plant's capacity has been progressively expanded — from an initial 3 lakh units to a claimed 4.3 lakh units per year (as of mid-2024) — to support both domestic sales and exports. Kia operates under the Hyundai Motor Group umbrella and shares platforms and components with Hyundai India, enabling cost efficiencies across the group.
Under its 'Kia 2.0' mid-term strategy, the brand targets a claimed 10 percent market share by 2028 and plans to double its dealer network to around 600 touchpoints. On the EV side, Kia follows a top-down approach — the EV6 and EV9 are brought in as premium imports, while a ground-up compact EV and an electric MPV have been announced for future introduction. A plug-in hybrid powertrain is also slated to join the Indian lineup in 2026, broadening the brand's electrified offerings beyond pure EVs.
Positioned as a value-premium brand, Kia competes on feature richness, design, and powertrain breadth rather than on price alone. The Seltos remains the brand's flagship volume product — historically accounting for over half of its Indian sales — while newer entrants like the Syros and Carens Clavis target incremental segments. The Sorento has been announced as an upcoming addition, signalling Kia's intent to move further upmarket in the SUV space.
