The Maruti Suzuki WagonR, launched in December 1999, is the longest-running hatchback nameplate on sale in India, at 26 years and 10 months by October 2026. The Alto follows from 2000 and is now sold only as the Alto K10, from Rs 3,69,900, and the Swift has been on sale since May 2005. The oldest non-Maruti name is the Hyundai i20, from 2008. The Maruti Suzuki WagonR is the hatchback nameplate that has been on sale in India the longest. Maruti launched it in December 1999, so by October 2026 it has been on sale for 26 years and 10 months, across three generations. The Alto is a few months younger: Maruti dates its launch to 2000, and it is now sold only as the Alto K10. The Swift is third, on sale since May 2005. The first non-Maruti name on the list is the Hyundai i20, launched in 2008. Older hatchbacks did exist. The Maruti 800 went to its first customer on 14 December 1983, and Hyundai's Santro arrived in 1998. Neither is on sale today, so neither counts.

Every launch date below comes from the manufacturer's own press release, annual report or history page, except where we say otherwise. That matters because model histories quoted online often blur launches, facelifts and renames.

The top three, in detail

1. Maruti Suzuki WagonR: December 1999

Maruti's December 2025 release marking 35 lakh units of production says the WagonR was "launched in India in December 1999". The production total covers three generations. The current generation launched in January 2019, according to Maruti's 2019 release marking the car's twentieth year. Maruti's 2025-26 annual report says the WagonR has been in India's top ten selling models for the last ten years and is the country's highest-selling CNG car.

What it is today, from the current brochure: a 1.0-litre K10C making 50.4 kW (68.5 PS) on the LXi and VXi, and a 1.2-litre K12N making 66.9 kW (90.9 PS) and 113.7 Nm on the ZXi and ZXi+. Certified mileage is 24.35 km/l (1.0 manual), 25.19 km/l (1.0 AGS), 23.56 km/l (1.2 manual) and 24.43 km/l (1.2 AGS), and the S-CNG manages 33.47 km/kg. Every variant has six airbags, ESP and rear parking sensors. The boot holds 335 litres, and the touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is on the ZXi+ only. Prices run from Rs 4,98,900 to Rs 7,23,900, the top figure being the flex-fuel ZXi+ Bioflex.

2. Maruti Suzuki Alto: 2000, now only as the Alto K10

Maruti's August 2023 release says "launched in the year 2000, the original Alto was an instant hit and by 2004 it had already become India's no.1 selling car". Its 2025-26 annual report gives the same year and says the third-generation Alto launched in 2022. The nameplate has run without a break, but the car behind it has changed more than the WagonR has. CarWale reported in April 2023 that Maruti had stopped producing the Alto 800, leaving the Alto K10 as the only Alto on Maruti's current Arena line-up.

What it is today: a 1.0-litre K10C making 50.4 kW and 91.1 Nm, certified at 24.39 km/l (manual), 24.90 km/l (AGS) and 33.40 km/kg on CNG. Six airbags and ESP are standard. The brochure rates the CNG version for four occupants, not five. Prices run from Rs 3,69,900 to Rs 5,44,900. The base Std (O) has no air conditioner or power steering.

3. Maruti Suzuki Swift: May 2005

Maruti's June 2025 twentieth-anniversary release says the Swift was "first introduced in May 2005". It lists the later generations: 2011, 2018, and the fourth-generation Epic New Swift in 2024. The 2025-26 annual report counts more than 3.3 million Swifts sold in India.

What it is today: a 1,197 cc Z12E three-cylinder making 61 kW (82.93 PS) and 112.4 Nm. That is not the 81.58 PS often printed for it, which is the Dzire's tune of the same engine. Certified mileage is 25.35 km/l (manual) and 26.25 km/l (AMT). The S-CNG is certified at 35.07 km/kg (manual) and 35.34 km/kg (AGS), which tops Maruti's hatchback range. Six airbags, ESP, hill hold and ISOFIX are standard. Prices run from Rs 5,83,900 to Rs 8,86,400 in single-tone paint, or Rs 8,88,900 for the dual-tone ZXi+ AMT.

The rest of the list

Hyundai i20 (2008) and Grand i10 Nios (2013)

Hyundai's own timeline, published with its 2025-26 annual report, lists "2007 Launched the Hyundai i10", "2008 Launched the Hyundai i20" and "2013 We launched the Grand i10". Hyundai's milestones page records the launch of the "All New GRAND i10 NIOS" on 20 August 2019. How you count the Nios is a judgement call. The Grand i10 name has run since 2013. The i10 family goes back to 2007, but the plain i10 is no longer sold, so we date the current car from 2013. On that basis the i20 is the oldest non-Maruti hatchback nameplate on sale among the cars we checked. The Nios's current brochure lists a 1.2-litre Kappa petrol making 61 kW (83 PS) and six airbags. Hyundai publishes no certified mileage, so we have none to quote.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio (February 2014)

Maruti's release dated 6 February 2014 announced the Celerio's launch with Auto Gear Shift, the automated manual that Maruti now fits across its small cars. Today's car has the 50.4 kW (68.5 PS) K10C, six airbags on every variant, and certified mileage of 25.24 km/l (LXi manual), 24.97 km/l (other manuals), 26.00 km/l (AGS) and 34.43 km/kg on CNG.

Renault Kwid (September 2015)

Autocar India reported that the Kwid reached showrooms on 24 September 2015. Renault's own sales release for November 2015 credits the Kwid with a 144 percent rise in its domestic sales that month. The current brochure, dated July 2026, lists a 999 cc three-cylinder making 69 PS and 92.5 Nm, with two airbags on the Evolution and six on the Climber.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno (October 2015)

Maruti's release of 26 October 2015 announced the "global launch of its premium hatchback, Baleno", sold through NEXA. The name itself is older. CarWale's archive lists a Maruti Baleno sedan sold from 1999 to 2007. So the badge first appeared in 1999, but the hatchback has been on sale since 2015, with a gap of about eight years between the two. We count the hatchback. The current car is the September 2026 update: 82.93 PS, certified at 23.80 km/l (manual) and 24.77 km/l (AGS), and six airbags as standard.

Tata Tiago (April 2016)

Tata's own release for the Tiago WIZZ edition says "Launched in April 2016, the Tata Tiago has been integral to the Company's Turnaround strategy". The current Tiago brochure, dated May 2026, lists a 1.2-litre three-cylinder making 86 PS and 113 Nm, with six airbags on every variant. Tata publishes no certified mileage.

The ones that are gone

The longest-lived hatchback names in India are not on the list above, because they are no longer sold:

  • Maruti 800. Maruti's first car went to its first customer on 14 December 1983, according to Maruti's November 2025 release. It is no longer in the line-up.
  • Maruti Zen. Maruti's annual report lists "Launched Zen" in its 1991 to 2000 milestones. The Zen is not in the current line-up.
  • Hyundai Santro. Hyundai's timeline lists "1998 We launched our first car, Hyundai SANTRO with 'tall boy' design". Hyundai's current hatchback range is the Grand i10 Nios, i20 and i20 N Line.
  • Alto 800. CarWale reported in April 2023 that Maruti had stopped making it. The Alto name continues on the K10.
  • Baleno sedan (1999 to 2007). See the Baleno entry above.

If the Santro were still sold, its 1998 launch would put it at the top of this list, about a year ahead of the WagonR.

Does a long-running name mean a better car?

Not by itself. The WagonR, Alto and Swift on sale today share almost nothing mechanical with the first cars to carry those names. The Swift is on its fourth generation and a different engine family. The crash-test evidence is also mostly older than the current cars. Global NCAP's 2023 tests of the WagonR and Alto K10 were of two-airbag versions, scoring 19.69/34 and 21.67/34 for adult protection, and both now have six airbags but have not been retested. The Baleno's Bharat NCAP results (26.52/32 for adults with six airbags) apply to the variants assessed before the September 2026 update. A long run does tell you that parts and mechanics are easy to find. Maruti said in June 2025 that its network had over 5,400 service touchpoints. For what the current cars actually offer, see our Bharat NCAP hatchback ratings guide and the petrol and CNG hatchbacks comparison.

How this list was built and what was not verified

Launch dates come from the makers' own documents: Maruti press releases for the WagonR, Alto, Swift, Celerio and Baleno, and Maruti's 2025-26 annual report; Hyundai's annual-report timeline and milestones page; and Tata's press release for the Tiago. The Kwid's exact showroom date is Autocar India's report, which Renault's December 2015 sales release backs up. Specifications are from each car's current brochure. Prices are single-tone ex-showroom figures from Maruti's Arena and NEXA price pages and the Hyundai, Tata and Renault sites, checked October 2026.

Not verified from a first-party source: the end dates of the Maruti 800, Zen and Santro, and the exact launch month of the Alto and the i20. The Baleno sedan's 1999 to 2007 run comes from CarWale's archive, not from Maruti. We left out the S-Presso, Tata Altroz and Toyota Glanza, which are all newer than the Tiago.
