SUVs With a Powered Tailgate and Gesture Control in India (2026)
Powered, hands-free and gesture are three separate claims, and brochures blur them. A powered tailgate lifts on a motor; gesture opening adds a foot sensor under the bumper; Kia's Smart Power Tailgate on the EV6 and EV9 opens on key proximity instead. An electric tailgate release, which Hyundai lists on every Creta, is only a motorised latch. On ten of the eleven qualifying cars the feature sits on the top or second trim, which is why the price that matters is the price of that variant and not the model's entry price. Mahindra and Honda leave three of those variant prices unpublished, and Tata's price pages leave the Curvv Accomplished X+ blank.
Across every SUV on sale in India, from sub-four-metre crossovers to imported hybrids, eleven models open the boot when you wave a foot under the bumper. The cheapest is the Maruti Victoris ZXI at Rs 13,61,900, which is also the only one of the eleven you can buy with a manual gearbox and a mid-range trim rather than the top one. Below it, nothing: no compact SUV under four metres offers a gesture tailgate at any price, from any manufacturer.
The rest of the list is Tata, Mahindra and one Honda. Tata fits it to seven models, more than anyone, always near the top of the ladder. Mahindra puts it on two of its electric SUVs and none of its petrol or diesel ones. Honda's ZR-V has it as standard, because the ZR-V comes in one grade.
Powered, hands-free and gesture are three different claims
A powered tailgate lifts and closes on a motor when you press a button on the key, the dashboard or the tailgate itself. That is the baseline, and more cars have it than have the next thing.
Gesture opening adds a sensor, usually under the rear bumper, that triggers the motor when you swipe a foot past it with the key in your pocket. This is what people mean by a kick tailgate, and it is the only version that genuinely helps when both your hands are full.
Between the two sits a third arrangement that brochures also call hands-free: the tailgate that opens by itself when the smart key sits behind the car for a few seconds. Kia uses this on the EV6 and EV9. It works, but it is not a gesture, and you have to stand and wait.
Then there is the electric tailgate release, a motorised latch that pops the door open and leaves you to lift it. Hyundai lists one on the Creta, Creta Electric and Alcazar, Honda calls it an electrical tailgate lock on the Elevate, and Tata lists it on the Nexon.ev, Punch.ev and Tiago.ev. Treating those as powered tailgates is where most of the wrong answers to this question come from.
Everything below is taken from each manufacturer's own brochure or feature grid, using their wording.
Every SUV in India with a gesture-controlled powered tailgate
| SUV | Size class | Cheapest variant with it | Price of that variant |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maruti Victoris | Mid-size | ZXI 1.5 petrol 5MT | Rs 13,61,900 |
| Tata Curvv | Mid-size coupe SUV | Accomplished X+ DCA | Rs 18.50 lakh |
| Tata Curvv.ev | Mid-size electric | Empowered X 55 | Rs 19,39,000 |
| Mahindra BE 6 | Mid-size electric | Pack Three+ | Range starts Rs 19,45,000 |
| Tata Sierra | Mid-size | Accomplished+ 1.5 diesel MT | Rs 20,29,000 |
| Tata Safari | Large 7-seat | Accomplished X | Rs 21,29,990 |
| Mahindra XEV 9e | Large electric | Pack Three Select | Range starts Rs 21,90,000 |
| Tata Harrier | Large | Fearless X+ | Rs 22,34,990 |
| Tata Sierra.ev | Mid-size electric | Empowered 63 | Rs 22,79,000 |
| Tata Harrier.ev | Large electric | Empowered 75 | Rs 27,79,000 |
| Honda ZR-V | Mid-size hybrid | e:HEV EX, the only grade | Not published by Honda |
Prices are ex-showroom, read on 15 October 2026 from each manufacturer's own price page or price feed, and are for single-tone paint where a choice exists. Mahindra publishes a model range rather than a per-pack price on its electric SUV site, so those two rows carry the model's starting figure and the pack that actually has the feature costs more. Honda quotes the ZR-V city by city through its price enquiry tool and publishes no fixed ex-showroom figure.
The Victoris is the outlier, and not only on price
Maruti's wording is "Smart Powered Tailgate with Gesture Control", and the brochure explains it in one line: "Hands full? Just a swipe with your foot makes access to the boot effortless."
What makes it unusual is how far down the range it goes. The feature grid ticks it for ZXI, ZXI (O), ZXI+ and ZXI+ (O) and attaches no engine or gearbox condition, which works out at fifteen of the Victoris's twenty-one variants. Everywhere else on this list the feature belongs to the single top trim.
| Powertrain | Cheapest Victoris with the gesture tailgate | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Petrol manual | ZXI 1.5 5MT | Rs 13,61,900 |
| S-CNG | ZXI CNG 1.5 5MT | Rs 14,66,900 |
| Petrol automatic | ZXI 1.5 6AT | Rs 15,17,900 |
| Strong hybrid | ZXI Strong Hybrid eCVT | Rs 17,84,900 |
| Petrol AllGrip 4WD | ZXI+ 4WD 1.5 6AT | Rs 18,68,900 |
The CNG row has no equivalent anywhere else. No other SUV in India sells a CNG variant with a motorised tailgate, let alone a gesture-operated one, and the Victoris keeps its boot floor usable because the S-CNG tank sits under the body.
The gaps matter too. The LXI at Rs 10,49,900, both VXI petrols and the VXI strong hybrid at Rs 16,42,900 go without, so the cheapest Victoris hybrid with the tailgate costs Rs 1,42,000 more.
Maruti publishes nothing beyond that one line: no word on whether the key has to be within range, whether the same swipe closes it, or whether the opening height can be set. Two minutes at a dealership with your hands full will answer all three faster than any spec sheet.
The Tatas: seven models, and the trim is always near the top
Tata fits more gesture tailgates than anyone else: the Curvv, Sierra, Harrier and Safari, plus the Curvv.ev, Sierra.ev and Harrier.ev. The pattern holds across all seven. The feature sits in the top two or three trims, and the step that brings it usually brings Level 2 ADAS and a seventh airbag with it.
The Harrier is the clearest to price. "Gesture Controlled Powered Tailgate" is among the things the Fearless X+ adds over the Fearless X, next to ADAS Level 2, a 10-speaker JBL system and seven airbags. The Fearless X+ is Rs 22,34,990, against Rs 20,24,990 for the Fearless X.
The Safari uses the same wording and puts it one trim lower in its own ladder, on the Accomplished X at Rs 21,29,990, which also brings nine JBL speakers and ventilated front seats.
The Sierra calls its version "Powered Tailgate with Gesture / Kick Operation" and puts it on the Accomplished+, one step above the Accomplished. The cheapest Accomplished+ is the 1.5 diesel manual at Rs 20,29,000; there is no petrol manual in that trim.
On the electric side the Curvv.ev puts a "Gesture Controlled Powered Tailgate" on the Empowered X 55 at Rs 19,39,000, the second cheapest car on this whole list and the one to recommend. The Sierra.ev calls its version a "Clamshell Tailgate with Gesture Control", on the Empowered 63 at Rs 22,79,000, and the Harrier.ev lists "Powered Tailgate with Gesture Activation" on the Empowered 75 at Rs 27,79,000.
The petrol and diesel Curvv is the awkward one to price. Tata's brochure headline is "Gesture controlled powered tailgate. Let the feet talk", fitted to the Accomplished X+ DCA alone, and Tata's price page leaves that variant's price field empty. Its own comparison tool gives Rs 18.50 lakh, rounded, against Rs 13,99,990 for the Accomplished X below it, which has a manual tailgate. A Rs 4.5 lakh step, and the only Tata here without an exact rupee figure.
Mahindra: electric only
Mahindra's petrol and diesel SUVs have no powered tailgate at all. The Thar Roxx has a split tailgate with no motor, the XUV 3XO has nothing, and the XUV 7XO variant walk runs from AX to AX7 LUXURY without listing one. For a brand that fits sixteen-speaker audio and augmented-reality head-up displays, that is a conspicuous omission.
The two electric SUVs are different. The BE 6 grid lists "Power operated Tailgate with gesture control" under Pack Three+, alongside passive keyless entry and flush door handles. The XEV 9e grid has a row reading "Power tailgate with gesture control" with dashes for Pack One and Pack Two and standard for Pack Three Select and Pack Three. The XEV 9S, its three-row sibling, misses out on every pack, which is a strange decision on a 527-litre seven-seater.
Pricing is the problem for both. Mahindra's configurator publishes a range, Rs 19,45,000 to Rs 26,95,000 for the BE 6 and Rs 21,90,000 to Rs 30,50,000 for the XEV 9e, and then quotes the exact figure at booking.
Honda ZR-V: the one nobody lists
The ZR-V is new enough that it gets left off every version of this list, and it belongs on it. Honda's own specification sheet reads "Power Tailgate Open/Close" with two sub-items: "Hands-Free Access (Kick-Gesture)" and "Walk Away Close". Because the ZR-V is sold in a single e:HEV EX grade, that is standard equipment rather than a top-trim extra, which no other car here can say.
It is also the only one Honda will not put a public price on. Honda Cars India runs a city-specific price enquiry instead of a published ex-showroom list, and the ZR-V model page carries no figure at all.
Powered, but no gesture
| SUV | What the maker says | Where it starts |
|---|---|---|
| Renault Duster | "Electric powered tailgate", described as hands-free at a single touch, with no foot sensor mentioned | adventure trim |
| MG Hector | "Automatic Powered Tailgate Opening"; the gesture control MG advertises is i-SWIPE on the touchscreen | Savvy Pro |
| MG Windsor | "Powered Tailgate" on the top trim only | Top trim |
| Kia EV6 and EV9 | "Smart Power Tailgate", which opens on key proximity rather than a foot swipe | Top trims |
| Nissan Tekton | "Smart powered tailgate with anti-pinch", one-touch access | TEKNA+ |
| VinFast VF7 | Tailgate operation listed as electric release on the lower trim and powered on the upper | Upper trim |
The Renault Duster is the one to look at if a motorised tailgate at the lowest possible price is the goal. Renault's brochure calls it hands-free and single-touch and never mentions a foot or kick sensor, so it sits here rather than above. Try it at the showroom before assuming.
The SUVs with no powered tailgate at all
Maruti's Grand Vitara, Brezza, Fronx, Jimny, e Vitara and Invicto have none. Neither do the Kia Seltos, Syros and Sonet, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Taisor, the Volkswagen Taigun, the Skoda Kylaq or the Mahindra Thar Roxx, XUV 3XO, XUV 7XO and Scorpio N.
Hyundai is the brand most often miscredited, on the strength of an electric tailgate release that the Creta carries on every variant.
How this list was built
A model qualifies only if its own manufacturer's brochure or feature grid names a gesture, kick or foot-operated function on a powered tailgate, against a named variant. Marketing copy about hands-free convenience was not enough on its own, which is why the Duster and the Kia pair sit in the second table. Prices are the price of that variant, not the model's entry price, because on nine of the eleven cars here those two numbers are several lakh rupees apart. Scope is SUVs and crossovers, electric ones included; MPVs are out, which takes the Kia Carnival and its Smart Power Tailgate with them. If you want the mid-size class alone, with the Creta, Seltos, Hyryder, Taigun and Grand Vitara checked one by one, our mid-size SUVs with a gesture-controlled power tailgate guide goes through them.
What we could not verify
Mahindra does not publish per-pack ex-showroom prices for the BE 6 or XEV 9e, and Honda publishes no fixed price for the ZR-V, so those three rows name the variant without a figure rather than carrying an estimate. Tata's price pages publish only one price per trim family, leaving automatics, diesels and the dark editions blank, so the Curvv, Sierra and Safari figures above come from Tata's own comparison tool, which rounds to two decimals of a lakh.
Hyundai's Tucson brochure is an image-only PDF that returns no text, so the Tucson is in neither table. Check it in person if you are shopping at that price.
Nothing here reflects a hands-on test of how reliably each sensor reads a foot swipe. That varies with bumper design, sensor position and key proximity, and no manufacturer publishes a specification for it.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the cheapest SUV with a gesture-controlled powered tailgate?
The Maruti Victoris ZXI petrol manual at Rs 13,61,900 ex-showroom. It is also the cheapest with a manual gearbox, and the only one available with CNG, at Rs 14,66,900 for the ZXI CNG.
Which Victoris variants have it?
ZXI, ZXI (O), ZXI+ and ZXI+ (O), across petrol manual, petrol automatic, S-CNG, strong hybrid and AllGrip four-wheel drive. That is fifteen of twenty-one variants. The LXI, both VXI petrols and the VXI strong hybrid do not have it.
Do any compact SUVs under four metres offer one?
No. Not the Tata Nexon or Punch, the Maruti Brezza or Fronx, the Hyundai Venue or Exter, the Mahindra XUV 3XO, the Kia Sonet or Syros, the Nissan Magnite or the Renault Kiger. The feature starts in the mid-size class.
Does the Hyundai Creta have a powered tailgate?
No. Hyundai's Creta brochure lists an electric tailgate release on every variant, which unlatches the door electrically. You still lift and close it by hand. The Creta Electric and the Alcazar are the same.
How does Kia's Smart Power Tailgate differ from a gesture tailgate?
It opens when it detects the smart key standing behind the car for a few seconds. There is no foot sensor, so you wait rather than swipe. Hands-free, but not the same thing.
Which Mahindra SUVs have a gesture tailgate?
Only the electric BE 6, from Pack Three+, and the XEV 9e, from Pack Three Select. None of Mahindra's petrol or diesel SUVs has a powered tailgate of any kind, and nor does the XEV 9S.
