Which Premium MPVs Have the Best Fuel Economy in India? Certified Figures and the Hybrid Premium (2026)

The Maruti Suzuki Invicto and Toyota Innova Hycross hybrid share the best certified economy among premium MPVs, 22.16 km/l, or about Rs 4.51 a km at Rs 100 a litre. The Invicto Zeta Plus 7-seater at Rs 25,02,400 is the cheapest way to get it, Rs 1,73,600 below the Hycross VX hybrid. The Hycross petrol is rated 16.13 km/l, and its hybrid premium takes about 2,40,000 km (Invicto) to 3,43,000 km (Hycross VX) to repay in fuel. Toyota and Kia print no certified figure for the Innova Crysta, Carnival or Vellfire.

Among MPVs priced from about Rs 18 lakh upward, the best certified fuel economy is 22.16 km/l, and two cars share it: the Maruti Suzuki Invicto and the Toyota Innova Hycross hybrid, which use the same 2.0-litre strong-hybrid system. The Invicto is the cheaper way to get that figure, from Rs 25,02,400 against Rs 26,76,000 for the cheapest Hycross hybrid, a gap of Rs 1,73,600. The petrol-only Hycross is rated 16.13 km/l. The Toyota Innova Crysta diesel, Kia Carnival and Toyota Vellfire have no certified economy figure in their makers' brochures at all, so nobody can honestly rank them on this question. Prices are ex-showroom Delhi, checked October 2026.

That last point surprised us. For a segment where buyers spend Rs 20 lakh to well over Rs 1 crore, only one powertrain family prints a certified number. So this page does something narrower than a usual mileage list: it takes the figures that exist, converts them into a fuel cost per kilometre, and works out what the hybrid premium buys you at different annual mileages.

Fuel cost per km assumes Rs 100 a litre of petrol. Certified economy is the figure printed in each maker's current brochure: Maruti's Invicto brochure footnotes it as certified by the test agency under Rule 115 of the CMVR, and Toyota's Hycross brochure prints 22.16 km/l for the hybrid and 16.13 kmpl for the petrol. Maruti prices are from Maruti's own ex-showroom price feed in single-tone paint (the Invicto's top Alpha Plus is Rs 28,70,500 in metallic and Rs 28,79,800 in non-metallic). Toyota prices are from Toyota's Delhi price list and exclude the extra charge for Platinum White Pearl. The Carnival price is the ex-showroom figure Kia shows on its own Carnival page.

How this was worked out, and what we could not verify

The ranking criterion is the maker's certified fuel economy, nothing else. We did not use road-test figures, owner reports or the FAQ text on carmakers' websites, because those disagree with the brochures often enough to be useless here. NEXA's own Invicto FAQ, for example, quotes 23.24 kmpl, while the Invicto brochure and every Invicto variant card on the same site say 22.16 km/l. We used the brochure figure.

Cost per km is fuel price divided by certified economy. At Rs 100 a litre that is Rs 4.51 a km for 22.16 km/l and Rs 6.20 for 16.13 km/l. Your pump price will move both numbers, but not the gap between them in proportion.

What we could not check:

  • The Innova Crysta brochure lists the 2.4 diesel at 110 kW (150 PS) and 343 Nm with a 5-speed manual, but prints no fuel-efficiency figure. Toyota's Crysta web page says only that it "returns more miles for the gallon".
  • The Kia Carnival brochure gives 142 kW, 45 kgf.m of torque, an 8-speed automatic and a 72-litre tank, and again no economy figure.
  • The Vellfire brochure lists a 2.5-litre hybrid making 142 kW (193 PS) and 240 Nm with a 60-litre tank, and no economy figure. Toyota's Delhi price feed blocked our repeated requests during this check, so we have not printed a Vellfire price.
  • Real-world economy. Certified figures come from a fixed test cycle, and a strong hybrid's advantage is largest in slow traffic and smallest at steady highway speeds.

We left out electric MPVs, since a km/l figure doesn't apply to them, and the Kia Carens Clavis and Maruti XL6, which start below Rs 12 lakh and belong in a mainstream comparison. For that wider field, including CNG, see our most fuel-efficient MPVs in India.

Maruti Suzuki Invicto: the cheapest route to 22.16 km/l

The Invicto is sold only as a strong hybrid, in three versions: Zeta Plus 7-seater at Rs 25,02,400, Zeta Plus 8-seater at Rs 25,37,300 and Alpha Plus 7-seater at Rs 28,70,500. All three carry the same certified 22.16 km/l and a 52-litre tank.

Maruti's brochure lists the system at 139 kW (188.9 PS), with a 1,987 cc petrol engine, a 168-cell nickel-metal hydride battery at 201.6 V and an AC synchronous motor rated 83.73 kW and 206 Nm. The price page gives the engine alone as 112 kW at 6,000 rpm and 188 Nm at 4,400 to 5,200 rpm. There is an EV mode switch and Eco, Normal and Power drive modes on every version.

What matters for this question is the entry price. The Zeta Plus 7-seater gets you the segment's best certified figure for Rs 1,73,600 less than the cheapest Hycross hybrid, which is the VX 7-seater at Rs 26,76,000. The trade-off is equipment. The Zeta Plus has no parking sensors front or rear, no 360-degree camera, no tyre pressure monitoring and no rear window defogger, according to Maruti's own feature list, and its seats are not leatherette. The Alpha Plus adds all of those, plus ventilated front seats, a powered tailgate, the panoramic sunroof and a 10.1-inch screen.

It holds a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating with 30.43 of 32 for adult occupants and 45 of 49 for children, and six airbags are standard. See the Invicto model page for the full specification.

Toyota Innova Hycross hybrid: the same figure, more trims

The Hycross hybrid shares the Invicto's certified 22.16 km/l. Toyota's brochure states the system output as 139 kW (183.7 HP), the same kilowatt rating Maruti gives the Invicto, written in a different unit, with 191 Nm from the engine and 206 Nm from the motor.

Toyota sells the hybrid in four grades: VX from Rs 26,76,000, VX(O) from Rs 28,77,000, ZX at Rs 31,20,000 and ZX(O) at Rs 31,84,000, and a ZX(O) [LE] version listed at Rs 32,95,000. The VX and VX(O) come as 7- or 8-seaters, the ZX grades as 7-seaters only.

On economy alone there is nothing between the Hycross hybrid and the Invicto. The reasons to pay more are elsewhere. Only the ZX(O) gets Toyota Safety Sense, with adaptive cruise, lane trace assist, blind spot monitor and a pre-collision system, which no Invicto offers. The ZX grades add powered ottoman seats in the second row. The Hycross is also rated 5 stars by Bharat NCAP, with 30.47 of 32 for adults and 45 of 49 for children.

Toyota Innova Hycross petrol: what 16.13 km/l costs

The petrol Hycross uses the same 2.0-litre engine without the hybrid system, rated 126 kW and 204 Nm with a CVT. Toyota sells it as G-FLT, GX and GX(O), from Rs 18,70,000 to Rs 20,97,000 for the GX(O) 7-seater.

Its 16.13 km/l works out to Rs 6.20 a km, Rs 1.69 more than either hybrid. Over 1,00,000 km that is roughly Rs 1,68,700 in extra fuel at Rs 100 a litre.

The hybrid premium, worked out

This is where the certified figures earn their keep. Comparing the cheapest 7-seat hybrid of each brand with the dearest petrol Hycross 7-seater (GX(O), Rs 20,97,000):

Hybrid choiceExtra price over Hycross GX(O) 7-seaterFuel saved per kmKilometres to recover the extra price
Maruti Invicto Zeta Plus 7-seaterRs 4,05,400Rs 1.69about 2,40,000 km
Toyota Hycross VX 7-seaterRs 5,79,000Rs 1.69about 3,43,000 km

At 20,000 km a year, a typical private owner's mileage, the Invicto takes about 12 years to repay its extra cost in fuel alone and the Hycross VX about 17. At 50,000 km a year, the kind of distance an outstation or airport-run car covers, those fall to roughly 5 and 7 years.

Two caveats keep this honest. First, the hybrids are better equipped than the GX(O): the Invicto Zeta Plus adds an EV mode, cruise control and paddle shifters that the GX(O) lacks, and the Hycross VX adds those plus tyre pressure monitoring. Part of the price gap pays for that, not for the battery. Second, the payback assumes the certified gap holds on the road. In city traffic the hybrid's lead usually grows. On long highway runs it usually shrinks.

So if economy is the main reason you are looking at a hybrid, the Invicto Zeta Plus is the cheapest way in and repays its premium fastest. If you want the hybrid and the driver assistance package, the Hycross ZX(O) is the only one of the two that offers it, at Rs 31,84,000.

Where the diesels and the Vellfire fit

The Innova Crysta is the only diesel Innova on sale, and it is manual-only. Grades run GX, GX FLT, GX Plus, VX and ZX, from Rs 19,95,000 to Rs 26,96,000 on Toyota's Delhi list. The lower three grades have three airbags (driver, passenger and driver knee) and the VX and ZX have seven, according to the brochure. Without a certified figure from Toyota, we cannot say whether it is cheaper to run than the Hycross hybrid, and diesel's lower pump price means the answer is not obvious.

The Kia Carnival is sold as the Limousine Plus at Rs 59,64,900, with eight airbags and Level 2 ADAS. The Toyota Vellfire's brochure lists two grades, Hi and VIP Executive Lounge, both with second-row captain seats and ottomans. Both are bought for the back seat, not the fuel bill, and neither maker publishes a certified economy figure we could use.

The Maruti XL6, if premium means NEXA rather than price

Some buyers say premium and mean the XL6, NEXA's 6-seater with captain seats from Rs 11,62,300. Its brochure figures are 20.90 km/l with the manual, 20.27 km/l with the automatic and 26.23 km/kg for the Zeta CNG at Rs 12,60,800. Those are the brochure numbers. NEXA's price page shows 20.97 km/l and 26.32 km/kg, which don't match the brochure. On cost per km the XL6 CNG beats every car on this page, as our 6-seater MPV running cost comparison shows. It is a smaller, cheaper car, though, and doesn't belong in a Rs 25 lakh shortlist.

Which one to buy

For the lowest certified fuel cost in a premium MPV, buy a strong hybrid. Between the two, the Invicto Zeta Plus costs the least to get into. Pay for the Invicto Alpha Plus if you want sensors, a 360-degree camera and ventilated seats with the same economy, or the Hycross ZX(O) if adaptive cruise and the rest of Toyota Safety Sense matter to you. Stay with the Hycross petrol only if your annual mileage is low enough that the hybrid premium would take well over a decade to repay. If you need a diesel or a lounge-grade rear cabin, accept that the makers have given you no certified figure to compare.

For the same cars judged on luxury equipment instead, see luxury MPVs under Rs 30 lakh.

Frequently asked questions

Which premium MPV has the best fuel economy in India?

The Maruti Suzuki Invicto and Toyota Innova Hycross hybrid tie at a certified 22.16 km/l. They share a 2.0-litre strong-hybrid system rated 139 kW. The Invicto is cheaper, from Rs 25,02,400 against Rs 26,76,000 for the Hycross VX hybrid.

Is the Invicto's mileage 22.16 or 23.24 km/l?

22.16 km/l. That is the figure in the Invicto brochure's specification table and on every Invicto variant card on NEXA's price page. The 23.24 kmpl figure appears only in an FAQ answer on the NEXA site.

Is the Innova Hycross hybrid worth it over the petrol?

Only at high mileage. The hybrid's 22.16 km/l against the petrol's 16.13 km/l saves about Rs 1.69 a km at Rs 100 a litre. The cheapest Hycross hybrid costs Rs 5,79,000 more than the GX(O) 7-seater petrol, so the fuel saving alone takes about 3,43,000 km to repay the difference.

What is the mileage of the Innova Crysta and the Kia Carnival?

Neither maker prints a certified figure in its current brochure, so we have not quoted one. Any number you see for them comes from a third party, not from Toyota or Kia.

Does the Invicto have ADAS?

No. Maruti's Invicto feature list has no adaptive cruise or lane assistance on either trim. Among the two 22.16 km/l hybrids, only the Toyota Hycross ZX(O) offers driver assistance.
