The MPV with the highest torque in each segment, going by makers' published figures, is the Renault Triber turbo among sub-4-metre 7-seaters (180 Nm), the Kia Carens Clavis 1.5 turbo petrol among compact MPVs (253 Nm), the Toyota Innova Crysta 2.4 diesel among large Innova-class MPVs (343 Nm) and the Kia Carnival among luxury MPVs (45 kgf.m, or 441 Nm). The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and XL6 make 139 Nm, well behind the Clavis. The Maruti Suzuki Invicto and Toyota Innova Hycross hybrid are a special case: their makers publish engine torque (188 Nm and 191 Nm) and motor torque (206 Nm) separately, with no combined figure, so they can't be placed against the Crysta on one number. Prices are ex-showroom Delhi, checked October 2026.

Torque is the twisting force that gets a loaded people-mover moving and keeps it pulling up a slope. Where in the rev range it arrives matters about as much as how much there is, so this page lists both. Peak power is a different ranking, and the order changes: the hybrids and the Carnival lead on power, while diesels dominate on torque. This page is about torque only, and it compares cars within the segment you are likely to shop in.

Torque figures come from each model's current brochure. Toyota prints engine speeds in revolutions per second; we converted them to rpm. Kia prints the Carnival's torque in kgf.m only. The strong hybrids (Invicto, Hycross hybrid, Vellfire) are covered separately below because their makers don't publish one combined torque number. Maruti prices are from Arena and NEXA price pages in single-tone paint, Toyota prices from Toyota's Delhi dealer price list (excluding the pearl white surcharge), and Kia prices from Kia's model pages.

How this list was built and what was not verified

We grouped MPVs by size and price, because a Rs 9 lakh Ertiga and a Rs 60 lakh Carnival are never cross-shopped. Within each group the leader is the variant with the highest torque figure printed by its maker. Where a car has several engines, each engine counts separately. Torque figures for strong hybrids are listed as engine and motor torque, exactly as published, since adding them would overstate what reaches the wheels.

What we could not check:

  • Electric MPVs (BYD eMAX 7, Kia Carens Clavis EV, MG M9) are not included. We couldn't get their makers' spec sheets during this check, and we won't quote torque figures we haven't read. Electric motors typically make strong torque from very low speeds, so if an EV fits your plans, check their published figures against this table.
  • The Mercedes-Benz V-Class appeared in the draft this page started from. We couldn't confirm it is currently sold in India or find a current Mercedes-Benz India spec sheet, so it is not included.
  • The Nissan Gravite, the base Kia Carens and the Toyota Rumion were not verified. The Rumion shares the Ertiga's engine, but Toyota sometimes rates shared engines differently, so we haven't given it Maruti's numbers.
  • Toyota's price list returned no Vellfire price, and Renault's page doesn't give a separate price for the Triber turbo.

Sub-4-metre 7-seaters: Renault Triber turbo, 180 Nm

The Triber is the only sub-4-metre 7-seater we verified, and its new turbo engine nearly doubles its torque. Renault's brochure gives the turbo TCe 100 engine 100 PS at 5,000 rpm and 180 Nm from 2,000 to 3,750 rpm, with a 5-speed manual. The non-turbo engine makes 72 PS and 96 Nm at 3,500 rpm, with a manual or Easy-R AMT. Renault certifies the turbo at 21 km/l. The range starts at Rs 5,80,875 for a non-turbo Authentic, and the turbo is listed from the Evolution trim up. The draft we started from called the output 100 hp; Renault's figure is 100 PS.

The 180 Nm figure is higher than the larger Ertiga's 139 Nm, and it peaks lower in the rev range. That doesn't make the Triber the stronger car with seven people on board, because it is a smaller, lighter vehicle built to a lower price, but it does mean the turbo is the version to choose if you will often fill all three rows.

Compact MPVs: Kia Carens Clavis turbo, 253 Nm

In the segment Kia defines as vehicles under 4,555 mm, the Clavis leads on torque with two engines almost tied. The 1,482 cc turbo petrol makes 253 Nm from 1,500 to 3,500 rpm, and the 1,493 cc diesel makes 250 Nm from 1,500 to 2,750 rpm. The turbo comes with a 6-speed manual, a 6-speed iMT or a 7-speed DCT. The diesel comes with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. The Clavis's naturally aspirated 1.5 petrol makes 143.8 Nm at 4,500 rpm, and the Clavis CNG makes 123.2 Nm in CNG mode. The range runs from Rs 11,38,900 to Rs 21,78,900, but the turbo and diesel are not on the cheapest trims.

The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and XL6 share the 1.5-litre K15C, rated at 139 Nm at 4,300 rpm in Maruti's published figures for both. That is 114 Nm less than the Clavis turbo, and it peaks much higher in the rev range, so on paper the Marutis are clearly behind on pulling power. In CNG mode the XL6 makes 121.5 Nm at 4,200 rpm. What the Marutis offer instead is price: the Ertiga runs from Rs 8,90,000 to Rs 13,14,100, against a Clavis range that starts at Rs 11,38,900 and reaches the turbo only on higher trims. The XL6, a 6-seater only, is certified at 20.90 km/l with the manual and 26.23 km/kg on CNG. For a family that mostly drives in town, 139 Nm is enough. For regular hill runs with a full cabin, the Clavis's extra torque is worth testing.

Large MPVs: Toyota Innova Crysta, 343 Nm

The Innova Crysta's 2,393 cc diesel makes 343 Nm from about 1,400 to 2,800 rpm, according to Toyota's brochure, which is the most of any Innova-class MPV and arrives low in the rev range. Power is 110 kW (150 PS). The only gearbox is a 5-speed manual. Prices run from Rs 19,95,000 for the GX 7-seater to Rs 26,96,000 for the ZX.

The petrol Innova Hycross is the runner-up on a single published figure, at 204 Nm from about 4,500 to 4,900 rpm, with a CVT, from Rs 19,53,000. That is 139 Nm less than the Crysta, and it peaks almost 2,000 rpm higher.

The hybrid exception: Invicto and Hycross hybrid

The Maruti Suzuki Invicto and the Innova Hycross hybrid use the same 2.0-litre strong-hybrid system, and neither maker publishes a combined torque figure. NEXA's Invicto spec table gives the engine 188 Nm at 4,400 to 5,200 rpm, and the Invicto brochure gives the motor 206 Nm. Toyota's Hycross brochure gives the same engine 191 Nm at about 4,400 to 5,200 rpm and the motor 206 Nm. We have kept each maker's figure rather than picking one.

The motor's 206 Nm is available from low speeds, which is why both cars feel quick away from a standstill in traffic. But you can't add 188 and 206 and compare the result with the Crysta's 343 Nm, because the engine and motor don't deliver their peaks at the same moment. On published figures the Crysta leads this segment. On power, though, the hybrids lead it: both makers rate the system at 139 kW, against the Crysta's 110 kW.

The Invicto Zeta Plus 7-seater costs Rs 25,02,400, Rs 1,73,600 less than the cheapest hybrid Hycross (VX 7-seater, Rs 26,76,000), and both are certified at 22.16 km/l. Bharat NCAP rates the Invicto 5 stars, 30.43 of 32 for adults and 45.00 of 49 for children. If you want low-speed response and economy more than diesel pulling power, the Invicto is the cheaper way to get it. If you want the most torque in the segment and are happy with a manual, the Crysta is the answer.

Luxury MPVs: Kia Carnival, 441 Nm

Kia's Carnival brochure gives its 2.2-litre diesel 142 kW and 45 kgf.m, which is 441 Nm and the highest torque of any MPV we verified. It uses an 8-speed automatic. It is sold as the Limousine Plus at Rs 59,64,900, a 7-seater 5,155 mm long. Kia doesn't print the rpm at which the torque peaks.

The Toyota Vellfire is the only other luxury MPV we verified. Its 2.5-litre hybrid system makes 142 kW (193 PS), the same peak power as the Carnival, but Toyota quotes 240 Nm for the engine at about 4,300 to 4,500 rpm and no combined torque. So the two tie on power and the Carnival leads clearly on the published torque figure. For how they compare as rear-seat cars, see our chauffeur-driven MPV guide.

Kia Carnival 2.2 diesel441 NmRs 59,64,900Rs 13,526

This is a blunt measure, and we have left out the hybrids because they have no single torque figure. The Crysta gives the most torque for the money among the cars we could price exactly. The Ertiga is close behind on this measure because it is cheap, not because it is strong.

Frequently asked questions

Which MPV has the highest torque in India?

Of the MPVs we verified, the Kia Carnival, with 45 kgf.m (441 Nm) from a 2.2-litre diesel. It costs Rs 59,64,900. The Toyota Innova Crysta diesel is second at 343 Nm, from Rs 19,95,000.

Which compact MPV has the most torque?

The Kia Carens Clavis 1.5 turbo petrol, at 253 Nm from 1,500 to 3,500 rpm. The Clavis diesel is close at 250 Nm. The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and XL6 make 139 Nm.

What is the torque of the Maruti Invicto?

Maruti publishes the figures separately: the 2.0-litre engine makes 188 Nm at 4,400 to 5,200 rpm and the electric motor makes 206 Nm. There is no combined torque figure. Total system power is 139 kW (188.9 PS).

Why do diesel MPVs have more torque than petrol ones?

Diesel engines produce their torque at lower engine speeds, and the turbocharged diesels in this segment are tuned for it. The Crysta makes 343 Nm from about 1,400 rpm, while the petrol Hycross makes 204 Nm and peaks at about 4,500 rpm.

Does more torque mean worse fuel economy?

Not necessarily. Toyota publishes no certified mileage for the Crysta, but the Invicto and Hycross hybrid are certified at 22.16 km/l with 206 Nm of motor torque. Economy depends more on the powertrain type than on the torque figure. Our fuel-efficient 7-seater comparison has the details.
