The most iconic off-road SUVs on sale in India, judged by how far back their makers can document an unbroken line, are the Jeep Wrangler (Jeep traces its 4x4 story to the 1940 Willys Quad prototype), the Land Rover Defender (the first Land Rover was launched on 30 April 1948), the Mahindra Thar (Mahindra's first 75 Willys Jeeps were assembled in Bombay in 1949), the Toyota Land Cruiser (prototype January 1951, renamed Land Cruiser in June 1954), the Suzuki Jimny (first launched in 1970) and the Mercedes-Benz G-Class (in production since 1979). Prices run from Rs 10,32,000 for a rear-wheel-drive Thar OG and Rs 12,59,000 for a Jimny to Rs 2,24,93,300 for a Land Cruiser GR-S, ex-showroom, checked October 2026.

Every date here comes from the maker's own history page, press release or brochure. Where a maker does not date something, we have left it out, which is why a few familiar stories are missing. For a ranking on hardware instead of heritage, see the best off-road SUVs in India.

What we count as iconic

Three things, in this order. First, a lineage the maker itself can date, unbroken to the car in today's showroom. Second, a real connection to India, through local assembly, a cult following here, or service in Indian conditions. Third, genuine off-road hardware, meaning four-wheel drive with low range, so the badge is still backed by the car. Styling alone does not qualify a car.

The icons, oldest lineage first

1. Jeep Wrangler

The Wrangler carries the oldest bloodline here. Jeep India's own history page starts with the 1940 Willys Quad prototype and the wartime Jeep that followed it, then marks the coil-sprung Wrangler TJ in 1997, the Wrangler Rubicon in 2003 and the four-door Wrangler Unlimited that came after. Jeep India unveiled the 2024 Wrangler Unlimited and Rubicon here, and it says its Wrangler Willys '41 special edition, 30 cars, sold out across India in seven days. Even the current special editions lean on the past: Jeep says the 1960 CJ-5 helped inspire the 2026 Wrangler Whitecap.

Jeep India's capability page lists two 4x4 systems, Selec-Trac and Rock-Trac, and a heavy-duty Dana 44 full-float rear axle. It does not publish ground clearance or angles as numbers. The Wrangler starts at Rs 67,70,000 ex-showroom.

2. Land Rover Defender

Land Rover's own timeline puts the first Land Rover at the Amsterdam Motor Show on 30 April 1948, with an 80-inch wheelbase and a 1,595 cc petrol engine, approved by Rover's board as an "all-purpose vehicle on the lines of the Willys-Overland post-war Jeep". The Ninety and One-Ten were renamed Defender 90, 110 and 130 in 1990.

The India story is the best of any car here. In 2018 Land Rover India filmed the 31 km route from Maneybhanjang to Sandakphu in West Bengal, which sits at 3,636 m and was then served by a fleet of 42 Series Land Rovers dating back as far as 1957. Today's Defender is a different machine, with a twin-speed transfer box, Terrain Response and up to 293 mm of clearance quoted by Land Rover India. Land Rover says the Defender Octa can wade up to a metre, double the original Defender. The 110 starts at Rs 1,07,00,000.

3. Mahindra Thar OG and Thar Roxx

Mahindra's timeline is the reason the Thar belongs near the top. In 1949, it says, 75 Jeeps arrived from Willys Overland Export Corporation in completely knocked-down form and were assembled at Mazagon, Bombay. In 1964 Mahindra specially built the Jeep that carried Pope Paul VI. The same timeline lists the 2020 relaunch of the Thar and the Thar Roxx launch on 15 August 2024. For many Indian buyers the Thar is what an off-roader looks like, and Mahindra's brochure leans on that, calling it the "Legendary Thar" with an "iconic outline".

The heritage comes with modern hardware on the right trims. The Thar OG 4WD has a manual-shift part-time transfer case with low range and an electronic locking differential, plus 232 mm of clearance and 650 mm of wading. The Roxx diesel 4x4 adds a 41.7-degree approach angle. Know what the badge does not include: a rear-wheel-drive Thar OG from Rs 10,32,000 has no low range at all, and the cheapest 4WD Thar OG, at Rs 15,59,500, has dual airbags rather than the six on the ZXT.

4. Toyota Land Cruiser

Toyota's 75-year history says it completed a prototype of the four-wheel-drive truck that became the Model BJ in January 1951, after a five-month development. Because "Jeep" was a Willys-Overland trademark, the car became the Toyota BJ, and in June 1954 it was formally renamed Land Cruiser. Toyota's Land Cruiser site adds that the BJ was built for Japan's National Police Reserve, which chose a licence-built Willys Jeep instead, so Toyota converted the BJ for civilian use and put it into volume production in 1953.

In India the nameplate is the LC300, Rs 2,17,75,000 for the ZX and Rs 2,24,93,300 for the GR-S. Only the GR-S gets front and rear electronic differential locks; the ZX has a rear torque-sensing limited-slip differential. Both use a 3.3-litre V6 diesel with 227 kW and 700 Nm.

5. Suzuki Jimny

Suzuki dates the Jimny to 1970, when it launched as the only four-wheel-drive minicar in Japan. The first compact Jimny, the LJ80, followed in 1977. Maruti's brochure counts four generations: 1970, 1981, 1998 and 2018, and it says the Gypsy that Indian buyers knew in the 1980s "owes its oomph to the Second Generation Jimny". Suzuki launched the current generation in Japan on 5 July 2018, its first all-new Jimny in 20 years, and says the model has been sold in 194 countries and regions.

So the Jimny's line is younger than the four above, but it has carried one name without a break since 1970; only the Land Cruiser name is older here. The India car (see our Maruti Jimny model page) is a five-door with ALLGRIP PRO and low range on every trim, a ladder frame and three-link rigid axles, 210 mm of clearance and a 46-degree departure angle, all from Maruti's brochure. Its weaknesses are the ones a long-lived small 4x4 always has: four seats, 211 to 219 litres of boot with the rear seats up, and a 1.5-litre engine of 77.1 kW (104.8 PS). It costs Rs 12,59,000 to Rs 14,51,700.

6. Mercedes-Benz G-Class

Mercedes-Benz's own history of its vehicle icons lists the G-Class from 1979 and notes that it has been produced continuously since then. Mercedes-Benz India sells the G 450 d (a 2,989 cc six-cylinder diesel with 750 Nm) and the AMG G 63, and states three selectable differential locks with 100% locking effect. It does not print a price on the model page.

7. Force Gurkha

The Gurkha is the newest name here and the hardest to date. Force Motors describes itself as "a trusted Force since 1958", but neither of its websites gives the Gurkha's launch year, so we have not printed one. Its claim to icon status is hardware and a following among Indian enthusiasts: manual front and rear differential locks, 233 mm of clearance and 700 mm of wading for Rs 16,51,881 (3-door) or Rs 17,83,366 (5-door). Force lists only dual airbags and no automatic.

Which icon fits which buyer

  • The one Indian buyers recognise first: the Thar OG, but buy a 4WD trim if the off-road story matters to you.
  • The longest unbroken name at a sensible price: the Jimny, a nameplate in use since 1970 and the only icon here with low range on every variant.
  • The original, with a price to match: the Wrangler or the Defender.
  • Heritage and hardware with no budget: the Land Cruiser GR-S or the G-Class.

How this list was built and what we did not verify

We ranked by how far back each maker documents an unbroken lineage, then checked each date and figure against the maker: Jeep India's history and capability pages, Land Rover's Series to Defender timeline and Land Rover India's Sandakphu release, Mahindra's corporate timeline and brochures, Toyota's 75-year history and Land Cruiser site, Suzuki's 2018 Jimny release and Maruti's Jimny brochure and price feed, Mercedes-Benz's vehicle-icons page and India model page, and Force's brochure and price page.

Several dates in the draft we started from had no first-party source, so we removed them, including a 2010 date for the first Thar, a production start for the Gurkha, the end of original Defender production and cumulative Land Cruiser sales. The draft's Wrangler prices (Rs 66.20 to 70.80 lakh) did not match Jeep India's current "starting at Rs 67.70 lakh", and its claim that the Land Cruiser has a locking centre differential is not what Toyota's India brochure lists. We did not drive these cars for this piece, and prices change, so confirm with a dealer.
