7 Best Off-Road SUVs With 6 Airbags in India (2026)

7 Best Off-Road SUVs With 6 Airbags in India (2026)

Read the Mahindra Scorpio-N line first: it has six airbags only from the Z8S up, and its Z2, Z4 and Z6 come with two. Only two of the seven have been crash tested at all, the Thar Roxx and the Victoris. And the distinction that matters off road is low range: the Jimny, Thar Roxx, Scorpio-N and Fortuner have a low-range transfer case, while the Grand Vitara, Victoris and Urban Cruiser Hyryder use all-wheel drive without one.

Seven off-road SUVs in India offer six airbags or more with four-wheel or all-wheel drive, and the Maruti Suzuki Jimny is the cheapest proper 4x4 among them at Rs 12.59 lakh, with six airbags on every variant. The Mahindra Thar Roxx is the only ladder-frame 4x4 here that combines six airbags across the range with a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating, at 31.09 out of 32 and a full 45 out of 49.

One entry needs reading carefully before anything else. The Mahindra Scorpio-N has six airbags only from the Z8S up. Its Z2, Z4 and Z6 variants come with two. On a seven-seat SUV bought for rough roads, that is the most consequential line on this page.

Real 4x4s with low range

Maruti Suzuki Jimny, from Rs 12.59 lakh

The cheapest genuine 4x4 here, and every Jimny is one. Six airbags, dual front, side and curtain, are standard on every variant, confirmed in Maruti's brochure, as is the 1.5 K15B making 77.1 kW (104.8 PS) and 134.2 Nm with a claimed 16.94 km/l manual and 16.39 km/l automatic.

The hardware is the point: a ladder-frame chassis with three-link rigid axles at both ends, ALLGRIP PRO part-time four-wheel drive with a low-range transfer gear and 2H, 4H and 4L, a brake limited-slip differential, hill hold and hill descent control. Approach 36 degrees, breakover 24 degrees, departure 46 degrees, which is the best departure angle on this list by a wide margin.

It seats four, and it has no Bharat NCAP result.

Mahindra Thar Roxx, 4x4 from Rs 19.42 lakh

The strongest combination here of capability and measured safety: 5 stars at Bharat NCAP with 31.09 out of 32 and a full 45 out of 49, covering all variants, with six airbags throughout.

Four-wheel drive comes with the diesel, a manual-shift part-time system with high and low range, an electronic locking rear differential and front-axle disconnect. The 2.2 diesel makes 152 PS and 330 Nm with the manual and up to 175 PS and 400 Nm with the automatic, claiming 15.2 km/l; the 2.0 turbo petrol is rear-drive only.

Off-road hardware runs to 4XPLOR terrain modes for snow, sand and mud, CrawlSmart low-speed crawl control, IntelliTurn, hill hold and descent, 650 mm of wading depth, and approach, breakover and departure angles of 41.7, 23.9 and 36.1 degrees. It also carries a Level 2 suite with adaptive cruise, autonomous emergency braking and lane departure warning.

Mahindra Scorpio-N, 4x4 with six airbags from Rs 22.86 lakh

The only seven-seat 4x4 here under Rs 26 lakh, with shift-on-the-fly four-wheel drive, 4-Low, an electronic brake locking differential and 4XPLOR terrain modes for normal, snow, mud and ruts, and sand.

The airbag count is variant-dependent and the gap is large. Six airbags arrive on the Z8S, Z8, Z8T and Z8L. The Z2, Z4 and Z6 below them have two. If you are shopping the lower half of this range, you are not buying a six-airbag car.

The 2.2 diesel makes 175 PS with up to 400 Nm, and a detuned 132 PS version powers the Z2 and Z4 two-wheel-drive manuals. The higher trims add a 540-degree camera with blind view monitor, driver drowsiness detection and a Level 2 suite. No Bharat NCAP result.

Toyota Fortuner, 4x4 from Rs 39.35 lakh

The only SUV here with seven airbags as standard on every variant, including a driver knee airbag. Part-time four-wheel drive with high and low range, an electronically switchable 2WD and 4WD control, a locking rear differential on 4x4 variants, active traction control, hill assist and downhill assist. Approach 29 degrees and departure 25 degrees.

The 2.8 diesel makes 204 PS with 420 Nm manual and 500 Nm automatic, with a 48V Neo Drive mild-hybrid version, and the 2.7 petrol 166 PS. It seats seven and has no Bharat NCAP result, which is worth noting at this price.

All-wheel-drive soft-roaders

These three share a platform and an engine, and all offer six airbags on every variant. None has a low-range gearbox, so they suit bad weather, broken roads and light trails rather than rock crawling.

Maruti Suzuki Victoris, AllGrip from Rs 18.69 lakh

The only all-wheel-drive SUV here with two independent 5-star results: 31.66 out of 32 and 43 out of 49 at Bharat NCAP, and 33.72 out of 34 with 41 out of 49 at Global NCAP.

AllGrip Select on the ZXi+ automatics brings Auto, Sport, Snow and Lock modes plus hill descent control, and those same variants carry the Level 2 assistance suite. The 1.5 K15C makes 103.06 PS and 139 Nm, claiming 19.07 km/l in AllGrip form, and the strong hybrid 92.45 PS with an 80 PS motor for 28.65 km/l.

Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, AllGrip from Rs 18.05 lakh

The cheapest route to all-wheel drive on this list. Same AllGrip Select system with Auto, Sport, Snow and Lock, same 1.5 K15C at 103.06 PS and 139 Nm, claiming 19.20 km/l with AllGrip and 27.97 km/l for the strong hybrid.

Six airbags standard across the range, with a 360-degree camera, stability control, disc brakes all round, tyre pressure monitoring and ISOFIX. No Bharat NCAP result, and no driver assistance at any price. That last part is the real gap against the Victoris sitting beside it.

Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, AWD from Rs 18.72 lakh

Mechanically the Grand Vitara with a Toyota badge and network. On-demand all-wheel drive on the V grade automatic, with a drive mode switch, hill hold and hill descent control. The 1.5 mild hybrid makes 103.06 PS and 139 Nm, claiming 19.39 km/l in AWD form, and the strong hybrid 115.56 PS combined for 27.97 km/l.

Six airbags on every variant, with vehicle stability control, tyre pressure monitoring, an electronic parking brake and a 360-degree camera. No Bharat NCAP result.

What matters off road

Low range or not. The Jimny, Thar Roxx, Scorpio-N and Fortuner have a low-range transfer case, which is what lets you crawl a steep or loose climb without slipping the clutch. The three AllGrip and AWD cars do not, and no terrain mode substitutes for it.

Angles before ground clearance. Approach, breakover and departure angles decide what you can actually drive over. The Jimny's 46 degree departure angle and short wheelbase matter more on a tight trail than any single clearance figure, and the Thar Roxx's 41.7 degree approach angle and 650 mm of wading depth are the best here for serious work.

Check the variant, twice. Five of the seven have six airbags throughout. The Scorpio-N does not, and on the Grand Vitara, Victoris and Hyryder the all-wheel-drive versions are specific upper trims, so the capable version and the well-equipped version are the same car whether you wanted that or not.
