Best Car for a First-Time Buyer Under Rs 8 Lakh With Good Mileage and Safety (2026)

Best Car for a First-Time Buyer Under Rs 8 Lakh With Good Mileage and Safety (2026)

Six cars priced from Rs 5.75 lakh now combine six standard airbags with a Bharat NCAP rating, and five of them score 5 stars for both adults and children. The Dzire leads on mileage, the Kylaq on crash score and the Punch on price. The detail that decides a CNG purchase: the Dzire, Brezza and Baleno ratings cover petrol variants only, while the Punch and Altroz ratings extend to their CNG variants. The Baleno is the weakest here at 4 stars for adults and 3 for children, and its under-Rs 8 lakh variants fall under the older two-airbag report.

If you want one car that covers all three, the Maruti Dzire is the pick: six airbags on every variant, 5 stars at Bharat NCAP for both adults (29.46/32) and children (41.57/49), a claimed 24.79 km/l on the manual and 25.71 km/l on the AMT, and a starting price of Rs 6.31 lakh ex-showroom. The Tata Punch is the cheapest way in at Rs 5.75 lakh with its own 5-star result, and the Skoda Kylaq posts the highest crash score of the six at 30.88/32.

All six cars below fit six airbags as standard across their range, and all six carry a Bharat NCAP rating. Five of them scored 5 stars for both adults and children. That is new: three years ago a first-time buyer picking on price alone was choosing between untested cars.

Key takeaways

  • Six cars priced from Rs 5.75 lakh have both six standard airbags and a Bharat NCAP rating.
  • Five score 5 stars for adults and children. The Baleno is the exception, at 4 stars for adults and 3 for children.
  • The Dzire has the best claimed mileage here, 24.79 to 25.71 km/l on petrol and 33.73 km/kg on CNG.
  • Ratings do not always cover the variant you want. The Dzire, Brezza and Baleno ratings exclude their CNG variants; the Punch and Altroz ratings include theirs.
  • None of the six offers ADAS at this price. The Baleno has it only on Alpha variants, which sit above Rs 8 lakh.

The part most lists skip: what the rating actually covers

A Bharat NCAP result applies to the variants listed in that report's Ratings Applicability table, not automatically to the whole model range. The gaps matter at this price, because the cheapest variants and the CNG variants are the ones buyers in this bracket actually shortlist.

  • Dzire. The 5-star result covers eight variants, from LXI through ZXI+, in both 5-speed manual and AGS form. Every one is petrol. The Dzire S-CNG is not in the list.
  • Brezza. Petrol variants only. The S-CNG is excluded, so the 26.90 km/kg figure comes without a crash rating attached.
  • Baleno. Bharat NCAP ran two tests. The six-airbag car scored 26.52/32 and 34.81/49, and that result lists only Zeta and Alpha. The two-airbag car scored 24.04/32 with the same 34.81/49 child score, and that result covers Sigma and Delta, which are the variants priced under Rs 8 lakh. Maruti now fits six airbags to every Baleno, but Bharat NCAP has not retested the range, and the September 2026 facelift is untested.
  • Kylaq. The 5-star result covers the manual variants. The Classic automatic is not included.
  • Punch and Altroz. Both ratings cover the full range, CNG included. For a buyer who wants a CNG car with a verified crash result, these two are the shortlist.

1. Maruti Dzire

The strongest all-rounder here, and the mileage leader. The 1.2-litre Z12E petrol is tuned to 81.58 PS and 111.7 Nm in the Dzire, slightly softer than the same engine in the Baleno, and Maruti claims 24.79 km/l on the manual and 25.71 km/l on the AMT. Boot space is 382 litres, which is the practical argument for the sedan over the hatchbacks.

Price: Rs 6.31 lakh to Rs 9.54 lakh. Four variants sit under Rs 8 lakh.

Engine: 1.2-litre petrol, 81.58 PS and 111.7 Nm. CNG option makes 69.75 PS and 101.8 Nm on gas.

Transmission: 5-speed manual or 5-speed AGS.

Safety: Six airbags, electronic stability program, hill hold assist, ABS with EBD and brake assist, ISOFIX mounts, front belt pre-tensioners with force limiters, three-point belts and reminders for all five seats, reverse parking sensors.

Also worth knowing: It scored 5 stars for adults (31.24/34) and 4 for children (39.20/49) at Global NCAP in 2024 under that programme's separate protocol. No ADAS on any variant.

2. Maruti Brezza

The cheapest sub-Rs 8 lakh route into a proper compact SUV, and the one entry variant that gets a turbo engine. The LXI Turbo MT at Rs 7.50 lakh runs the 1.0-litre K10C DiTC making 110.12 PS and 170 Nm, which is more torque than anything else on this list except the Punch turbo. Higher variants switch to the 1.5-litre K15C at 103.05 PS and 139 Nm, or the CNG at 87.8 PS.

Price: Rs 7.50 lakh to Rs 13.71 lakh. Only the LXI Turbo MT is under Rs 8 lakh.

Mileage: 20.47 km/l claimed on the LXI Turbo, within a petrol range of 19.96 to 21.09 km/l. CNG is 26.90 km/kg.

Safety: Six airbags, electronic stability program, ISOFIX mounts, front belt pre-tensioners with force limiters, belt reminders front and rear, emergency stop signal, ventilated front discs, reverse parking sensors.

The catch: The entry variant is sparse. Automatic climate control, rear vents and keyless entry arrive higher up, and the CNG variant carries no crash rating.

3. Maruti Baleno

The best-equipped car here for the money and the only one that offers ADAS at all, though not under Rs 8 lakh. The Z12E petrol makes 82.93 PS and 112.4 Nm, and the CNG claims 33.61 km/kg on the manual and 34.47 km/kg on the AGS, second only to the Dzire.

Price: Rs 5.99 lakh to Rs 9.99 lakh.

Mileage: 23.80 km/l manual, 24.77 km/l AGS.

Safety: Six airbags, electronic stability program, ABS with EBD and brake assist, rear camera and sensors, ISOFIX mounts, front belt pre-tensioners with force limiters, high-speed alert, emergency stop signal.

Also worth knowing: The 22.86 cm SmartPlay Pro+ screen, wireless Android Auto and CarPlay, cooled wireless charging and Suzuki Connect are all standard. Level 2+ ADAS is Alpha-only, from above Rs 8 lakh. Its crash result is the weakest of the six, and the sub-Rs 8 lakh variants fall under the two-airbag report.

4. Skoda Kylaq

The highest crash score here, 30.88/32 for adults and a clean 45.00/49 for children, and the only European car on the list. The 1.0-litre TSI turbo makes 115 PS and 178 Nm, the most power of the six.

Price: Rs 7.59 lakh to Rs 13.09 lakh. Only the Classic manual is under Rs 8 lakh.

Mileage: 19.05 to 19.68 km/l, the lowest here, and there is no CNG option.

Safety: Six airbags, electronic stability control, traction control, multi-collision braking, electronic differential lock, roll-over protection, brake disc wiping, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX mounts, belt reminders, reverse sensors.

The catch: The Classic is a genuinely basic car. Four speakers and no touchscreen, and a torque converter automatic only on higher variants, which the rating does not cover.

5. Tata Punch

The cheapest car on this list at Rs 5.75 lakh, with 5 stars and the tallest seating position of the six. The 1.2-litre Revotron petrol makes 88 PS and 115 Nm, with a 120 PS turbo and an iCNG above it.

Price: Rs 5.75 lakh to Rs 10.77 lakh.

Mileage: 20.09 km/l manual, 18.80 km/l AMT, 26.99 km/kg on CNG.

Safety: Six airbags, electronic stability control, hill hold assist, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX mounts, rear parking sensors.

Also worth knowing: The rating covers the whole range, CNG included, which is the single best reason to pick it over the Brezza or Dzire if you want a gas car. Ground clearance and the high driving position make it the easiest of the six on bad urban roads.

6. Tata Altroz

The only car here with three fuel options, petrol, diesel and CNG, all under one 5-star rating. The 1.2-litre Revotron makes 88 PS and 115 Nm, the CNG 74 PS and 103 Nm, and the 1.5-litre Revotorq diesel 90 PS and 200 Nm, which is the most torque of any engine on this list.

Price: Rs 6.00 lakh to Rs 10.90 lakh.

Mileage: About 18 to 23 km/l across petrol and diesel, and up to 27.80 km/kg on CNG, the best CNG figure of the three CNG cars here.

Safety: Six airbags, electronic stability control, ABS with EBD, rear camera, ISOFIX mounts, three-point belts for all occupants.

The catch: The diesel is a long-term bet in a market moving away from it, and the dual-clutch automatic only appears on petrol variants well above Rs 8 lakh.

How to choose between them

Buying on mileage and nothing else points at the Dzire, and it is hard to argue with 5 stars on both counts plus 25 km/l. Buying on crash performance alone points at the Kylaq, which trades roughly 5 km/l for the best adult score here. Buying on budget points at the Punch.

The one case where the answer changes completely is CNG. If you want a factory CNG car with a crash rating that actually applies to it, the choice narrows to the Punch and the Altroz, because the Dzire, Brezza and Baleno ratings all stop at their petrol variants.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best car for a first-time buyer under Rs 8 lakh?

The Maruti Dzire. It has the best claimed mileage of the six, 5 stars at Bharat NCAP for both adults and children, six airbags on every variant, and four variants priced under Rs 8 lakh starting at Rs 6.31 lakh. If you want a higher seating position, the Tata Punch is the cheapest of the six at Rs 5.75 lakh with the same 5-star result.

Which of these gives the best mileage?

The Dzire on petrol, at a claimed 24.79 km/l manual and 25.71 km/l AMT. On CNG it is also the Dzire at 33.73 km/kg, with the Baleno close behind at 33.61 to 34.47 km/kg. Among cars whose crash rating covers the CNG variant, the Altroz leads at up to 27.80 km/kg.

Do the base variants have six airbags?

Yes. All six cars fit six airbags as standard across the range, base variant included.

Does the Bharat NCAP rating apply to every variant?

No, and this is the detail to check before you sign. Each Bharat NCAP report carries a Ratings Applicability table. The Dzire, Brezza and Baleno tables list petrol variants only, the Kylaq table omits the Classic automatic, and the Punch and Altroz tables cover their full ranges. The Baleno's six-airbag result also lists only Zeta and Alpha, so the under-Rs 8 lakh Sigma and Delta variants sit under the older two-airbag report, which scored 24.04/32.

Why are the Swift, Tiago and Exter not on this list?

All three fit six airbags as standard and all three are priced under Rs 8 lakh, but Bharat NCAP has not tested them in their current form. This list is limited to cars with a published Bharat NCAP result.

Can I compare Bharat NCAP and Global NCAP scores directly?

No. The protocols and the maximum scores differ, with adult protection marked out of 32 at Bharat NCAP and out of 34 at Global NCAP. The Dzire's 29.46/32 and 31.24/34 are two separate results on two separate scales, not a before and after.
