Market position

Tata Motors is India's leading EV brand and a top-three overall passenger vehicle manufacturer, known for safety-focused, value-oriented SUVs and hatchbacks across petrol, diesel, CNG, and electric powertrains.

India strategy

Tata Motors is India's third-largest passenger vehicle manufacturer and the country's dominant force in alternative-powertrain cars. Its ICE lineup spans entry-level hatchbacks (Tiago, Altroz), compact sedans (Tigor), micro-SUVs (Punch), compact SUVs (Nexon, Sierra), coupe-SUVs (Curvv), and full-size SUVs (Harrier, Safari), with petrol, diesel, and CNG variants across most segments. The company has built a strong reputation for safety, with multiple models earning five-star Bharat NCAP ratings, and has aggressively expanded twin-cylinder CNG technology across its portfolio — currently offering CNG in five models including the Tiago, Tigor, Punch, Altroz, and Nexon.

On the EV front, Tata Motors holds a commanding lead in India's nascent electric passenger-vehicle market, offering electric variants of the Punch, Nexon, Harrier, Sierra, and Curvv, with the Safari EV expected by the festive season 2026. The company plans to grow its EV portfolio from six models to ten by FY2031 and is developing the premium Avinya EV range on a dedicated electric architecture. Tata Motors targets a 30% EV mix within its overall PV sales by FY2031, implying claimed annual EV volumes of 350,000–400,000 units.

Manufacturing is anchored at plants in Pune, Sanand (Gujarat), and Ranjangaon, with capacity currently around 900,000 units annually. The company plans to expand this to a claimed 1.3 million units over the next two to three years. Tata Motors' passenger vehicle business operates as a separate entity, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited (TMPVL), with Tata AutoComp and group synergies supporting localisation and cost competitiveness.

Looking ahead, Tata Motors' Investor Day (June 2026) outlined a roadmap to grow from nine models to fifteen by FY2031, with six all-new nameplates and more than twenty product interventions planned. The company targets annual PV sales of over 1.2 million units and an 18–20% market share by FY2031, up from roughly 13–14% currently. EVs and CNG together are expected to account for around 45% of India's PV market by that date, a structural shift Tata Motors is positioning itself to lead.
